The rough hydrangea ( Hydrangea aspera ), also known as fur hydrangea or velvet hydrangea , is a shrub or, rarely, a small tree belonging to the hydrangea family . It is used as an ornamental plant because of its flowers . The natural range is in Asia and ranges from the temperate to the tropical zone.

description

The rough hydrangea is a very variable species in terms of habit , leaf size, leaf shape and hairiness. It forms 1 to 4, rarely up to 10 meters high, sparsely branched shrubs or small trees with stem-round or slightly square, densely yellow or gray-white hairy branches. The bark is brown. The leaves have a 1 to 4.5 centimeter long, densely curly haired or bald stalk. The leaf blade is simple, 5 to 25 centimeters long and 2 to 8 centimeters wide, lanceolate to ovate to elliptical-elongated, long pointed, with a broadly wedge-shaped to rounded base and a serrate to doubly serrated leaf margin. The upper side of the leaf is sparsely to densely hairy, the underside densely gray-white downy to shaggy hairy. Six to ten pairs of nerves are formed.

The flowers are arranged in umbrella-shaped, 8 to 25 centimeters wide umbels with dense gray-yellow haired branches. The sterile flowers are 2 to 6 centimeters wide. They have four or five 1 to 3.3 centimeters long and 0.9 to 2.7 centimeters wide, greenish white, pink or red, broadly ovate, obovate or rounded sepals with sharply toothed, notched or whole edges. The numerous fertile flowers have a 1 to 1.5 millimeter long, bell-shaped to dome-shaped calyx tube with 0.5 to 1 millimeter long, broadly triangular to ovoid-triangular calyx teeth. The petals are 1.5 to 2.5 millimeters long, blue-violet to purple-red, oblong-ovate to ovate with a truncated base. The ten stamens are unequal in length, the anthers are about 0.5 millimeters in size and round. The ovary is subordinate, the two or three styles are bent back, the stigmas slightly enlarged.

The follicles are urn-shaped. They have a diameter of 3 to 3.5 millimeters with a semi-pointed base and a trimmed tip. The seeds are 0.4 to 0.5 millimeters in size, brown, spindle-shaped, elliptical or rounded, somewhat compressed and provided with about 0.2 millimeter long wings at both ends.

The species blooms from July to September, the fruits ripen from September to November.

Distribution and ecology

The natural range extends from the temperate to the tropical zone of Asia. The species is found in the Chinese provinces of Gansu , Guangxi , Guizhou , Hubei , Hunan , Jiangsu , Shaanxi , Yunnan and Sichuan , in Taiwan, Bhutan, in the Indian states of West Bengal and Sikkim , in Nepal, Myanmar, Vietnam and on the Indonesian islands Java and Sumatra . It grows in species-rich forests at altitudes of 700 to 4000 meters on moderately dry to fresh, slightly acidic to alkaline, nutrient-rich soils in light to partially shaded locations. The species is compatible with urban climates, but only moderately frost hardy and avoids sandy and clay subsoil.

Systematics

The rough hydrangea ( Hydrangea aspera ) is a species from the genus of the hydrangeas ( Hydrangea ) in the family of the hydrangea plants (Hydrangeaceae), subfamily Hydrangeoideae, tribe Hydrangeae. It was first described by David Don in 1825 .

use

Variety 'Macrophylla'

It is used as an ornamental wood because of its decorative flowers . A commonly used variety is 'Macrophylla', a slightly branched, 2 to 3 meter high shrub with thick shoots and mostly unbranched branches. The leaf blades are 15 to 25 inches long and ovate. The underside of the leaf is covered with gray-felted, curled or upright hair. The flowers are arranged in 25 centimeters wide, flat spherical umbels. The sterile flowers are white, the fertile pale purple. The variety blooms from July to August.
