Samuel Bonis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Samuel B. Bonis (born October 24, 1934 in New York City ) is an American geologist and volcanologist . He is regarded as a luminary with regard to the volcanoes of Central America , especially those of Guatemala .

Life

Origin, education and private life

He arrived in New York City District ( Borough ) Brooklyn , the son of Paul and Anna (nee Friedman) Bonis born. He studied geology and economics at Brooklyn College and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1955 . He continued his studies in geology at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and graduated in 1957 with a Master of Science degree . There he was in January 1967 with the dissertation Geologic Reconnaissance of the Alta Verapaz Fold Belt, Guatemala for Ph.D. PhD . In 1970 he took a UN course on geothermal energy at the Japanese University of Kyūshū .

Since April 9, 1960 he has been married to the Guatemalan Elba Edith Maldonado. Their children, Maíté and Ñola Regina, have contributed to some of his publications. He lives temporarily in Guatemala City and Hawaii .

Scientific career

Between 1957 and 1962 he worked for the petrochemical -Unternehmen Unocal in Guatemala , where he led in the tropical rain forest mapping for exploration by.

He then worked for the Instituto Geográfico Nacional de Guatemala from 1963 and led extensive mapping programs and volcanological studies, was active in engineering geology and earned services in management and in the defense against natural geological hazards. International reputation gained Bonis including through meticulous collecting hundreds ash samples in the aftermath of an eruption phase of Stratouvulkans Fuego in the fall of 1974. The analysis and interpretation of these extensive collection found its way into more than 50 scientific articles. He always paid particular attention to the socio-demographic aspects of volcanology and the effects of eruptions on the poorer population of rural, less developed regions. Together with Otto H. Bohnenberger Sr. and Gabriel Dengo (1922-1999) he tried to establish a national geological authority.

He stayed with the Instituto until 1984 and then worked as a freelance geological-volcanological consultant in Guatemala. He is also a frequent speaker and interviewee at the Universidad Francisco Marroquín . After the geological department at the Instituto Geográfico Nacional de Guatemala was closed, he and some colleagues were able to save parts of the geological library and in 2011 handed over a comprehensive collection of their maps and specialist publications to the Universidad Rafael Landívar , the Biblioteca Ludwig von Mises and the Universidad Francisco Marroquín as well as to the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala .

As early as 1966, Bonis had received a short-term post as a lecturer in historical geology at Louisiana State University . In January 1968, he was appointed at the Department of Earth Sciences of Dartmouth College in Hanover , New Hampshire , for Adjunct Professor (≈ adjunct professor ) of Geology. He worked there as a private lecturer without being a permanent member of the faculty. His contract expired in the 2000s. In 1976 he served as director and professor in the Organization of Tropical Studies (OTS), an international university network that operates several biological research stations in Costa Rica . He was also a scientific advisor to Michigan Technological University for geological excursions in Guatemala and was also employed at the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala.

Memberships

Bonis is a member of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior , the Sociedad Geológica de Guatemala , the Association of Geoscientists for International Development (co-founder 1974 and council member 1976-1984), the American Association of Petroleum Geologists , the New York Academy of Sciences and from Sigma Xi . In 1995 the Guatemalan government awarded him the "Order of the White Orchid" and in 2017 he was nominated for the Krafft Medal .
