Samuel Friedrich Capricornus , actually Samuel Friedrich Bockshorn (born December 21, 1628 in Žerčice near Mladá Boleslav , † November 10, 1665 in Stuttgart ), was a Bohemian conductor and composer .

Life

Samuel Capricornus' father was a Protestant pastor who fled with his family to Pressburg in what was then the Kingdom of Hungary for fear of the Counter-Reformation . After completing high school in Sopron (Ödenburg), Capricornus studied languages and theology in Silesia between 1643 and 1646, after which he came to the imperial court in Vienna as a musician . There he got to know the music of Giovanni Valentini and Antonio Bertali . After a short stay in Reutlingen , he was employed as a private music teacher in Preßburg for two years, from 1651 to 1657 he worked as music director in various churches and as music teacher at a high school in the city.

In May 1657 he received the position of court conductor at the court orchestra in Stuttgart , which he held until his death. His tenure at the Württemberg court was overshadowed by a bitter dispute with Philipp Friedrich Böddecker , the organist of the collegiate church, as he felt that he was being left out when filling the position of Kapellmeister and then incited the court musicians against Capricornus and criticized his compositions. From 1661 to 1665, the year Capricornus died, Johann Fischer was his pupil.

Capricornus was a prolific composer, he created works of almost all genres and is considered one of the main exponents of the accompanied song in his time. He also contributed to the development of the sacred concert and the cantata in the transition period between Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach . His works were already widely used as prints and manuscripts during his lifetime.
