The San Carlo Borromeo dei Milanesi is a Baroque church in Palermo , located in the Kalsa district of the city in Piazza Rivoluzione .

Building history

In the 17th century, merchants and craftsmen from Milan, neighbors of the Genoese settlement, settled outside the Porta San Giorgio. After a first church had been built in 1616 and a hospital in 1636 , the two Milanese brotherhoods working in Palermo decided to build a new church, which was completed in 1648 . It was planned in line with the Counter-Reformation principles of the Council of Trent , according to which, on the one hand, the pulpit should be placed in the acoustic focus of the church as the place of sermons and, on the other hand, lavish stucco work and frescoes should represent the heavenly glory. The church is under the patronage of the reform bishop of Milan, Charles Borromeo .

Building description

The facade

The church, located in the Kalsa district on Piazza Rivoluzione , is modeled on the San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane in Rome by Francesco Borromini . The three-storey facade is dominated by a concave curved central projection, which is separated from the rest of the somewhat simpler two-storey sides with their stone balustrades by pairs of columns . Volutes connect the sides with the third floor with a conspicuously designed four-pass window . The facade ends at the top with a cornice in the baroque gable.

The church interior

The rectangular vestibule leads to the oval church room with a size of 21.84 × 12.22 m. It is vaulted by an oval dome, which was restored by Gaetano Lazzaro after it was destroyed by the severe earthquake of 1726.

In the late 17th century, the walls are structured by pilasters and clad with colored marble according to a design by Paolo and Giacomo Amato . Pietro Martorana created the dome fresco “Apotheosis of San Carlo” in 1740 . Domenico Castelli, a pupil of Procopio Serpotta, completed the stucco decoration in 1743 based on a design by Giovanni Rossi .

The Cappella di San Carlo was built in 1691 by the architects Giovan Battista Ferrera and Balthasar Pampillonia. The decoration was designed by Paolo and Giacomo Amato, the painter Pietro Aquila took care of the implementation . The panel painting “San Carlo Borromeo distributes alms” by Pietro Alvino, the son of Giuseppe d'Alvino , painted for the church in 1622 is now in the Diocesan Museum of Palermo.
