Today's airport goes back to an airfield that the Japanese occupiers had built by 6000 forced laborers from Java and Allied prisoners of war during the Second World War . The labor camp gained notoriety when the surviving Australian prisoners were sent on the death marches of Sandakan from here in 1945 . Only six men survived.
