geography
The community extends in the foothills of the Scandinavian Mountains about 70 kilometers from north to south. The municipality is largely a forest-covered hill country with extensive wetlands in the east and south of the municipality. Sandviken became a market town in 1927 and a township in 1943. The current large municipality was created with the Swedish municipality reform in 1971 through the generous amalgamation of the municipality of Sandviken, the small town ( köping ) Storvik and the local communities of Järbo, Ovansjö, Årsunda and Österfärnebo. At that time, the different types of community were abolished, so Sandviken lost its town charter and, like all other Swedish communities, became a unitary community.
In the north of the municipality is the lake Storsjön , on the north bank of which lies the town of Sandviken. On the south bank is Årsunda, with a small church from the 15th century that is well worth seeing.
The south of the municipality is characterized by the lower reaches of the Dalälven , which widens to Färnebofjärden , now a national park. To the north of Färnebofjärden lies the old parish village of Österfärnebo . A headland extends from Österfärnebo in the Dalälven, at the southern tip of which is the largest prehistoric burial ground in Gästrikland with around 185 stone settings from the beginning of the 5th century.
economy
The parish is a traditional industrial parish dominated by large corporation Sandvik AB . Other industrial companies are located in Sandviken and Storvik.
