Sankta Maria kyrka

The Sankt-Marien-Kirche ( Swedish Sankta Maria kyrka ) is a church in the center of the southern Swedish city of Ystad . It is the parish church of the Ystad parish within the Lund diocese . The oldest parts of the church date from the 13th century.

history

The original church was built in the 13th century as a three-nave church in Romanesque style. At that time it was 18 meters long and lay between today's choir and the pulpit , with the central nave having a flat ceiling. In the 14th century, the church received an extension with the Holy Cross Chapel, which was demolished in 1840. Individual parts of it were reused; so z. B. Maria and Johannes figures, which are now in the choir.

The present church was built in the 15th century. The side aisle was extended to the ambulatory , which, together with the choir with the characteristic pointed arches , has a pronounced late Gothic style. In the middle of the 17th century the tower collapsed and the western part of the church was badly damaged. As part of the construction work, the church was provided with a transept in the Renaissance style ; the church tower was rebuilt towards the end of the century.

Organ loft

The organ loft is decorated with biblical motifs and was created by Carl Mört at the beginning of the 18th century. The organ front is adorned with a monogram of Charles XII. ; it is a reminder that the king and his troops stayed in the city for a while before the train to Narva .
