Sankt Simon und Judas is a neo-Gothic parish church in Hennef . Today's church was built from 1898 to 1900 in the center of the old part of Hennef, the Hennef "old town", on Kirchstrasse. The forecourt of the church was named Karol-Wojtyla-Platz on October 29, 2006 at the initiative of the parish council following a resolution by the city council in memory of the deceased Polish Pope John Paul II .

history

In the deed of foundation of the Michaelsberg Abbey in Siegburg from the year 1064 it is mentioned that Archbishop Anno transfers the church in Hennef together with the tithe right of the abbey. Accordingly, a church must have existed in Hennef beforehand. At what point in time the first church was built in the Hennef district cannot be answered today. The church probably received the patronage of the apostles Simon (the Zealot) and Jude (Thaddäus) because anno had previously been provost of the monastery of the same name in Goslar . The dispute after Anno's death between the Siegburg Abbey and the St. Cassius Abbey in Bonn over ownership in Hennef was finally settled in 1132 after compensation payments.

When the Hennef pastor converted to the new faith during the Reformation, the Minorites from the Seligenthal monastery provided pastoral care at the Hennef parish church for almost a hundred years.

The old church tower from 1744

The Church suffered badly in the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War . On October 28, 1672, the church was sacked by the French and on July 25, 1689 by the allies, and the church records were lost. Extensive renovations were carried out in 1720. In 1744 the tower had to be rebuilt, which is the only part of the old parish church that has been preserved. In 1787 the nave was also rebuilt and, in addition to the high altar consecrated to the apostles Simon and Jude , received two side altars, to the Virgin Mary and St. Hubertus are consecrated.

In 1895 it was decided to expand the choir because the church was felt to be too small and no longer appropriate for Hennef, who was aspiring in industrialization . The new pastor Hubert Wingerath (1896–1915) campaigned for the construction of a new church, which, for reasons of tradition, was to be built on the property next to the old parish church. Pastor Wingerath prevailed against his church council, which was influenced by Hennef industrialists. He initially favored the new building in the area of today's Hennef market square. The Cologne architect Theodor Roß designed a church in neo-Gothic style, construction of which began in 1898. It was solemnly consecrated on September 24, 1900 by the Archbishop of Cologne, Hubert Theophil Simar , and the relics of Saints Agilof and Paulinus were transferred to the high altar. The old church was demolished in 1904 except for the tower. The tower of the new parish church had to be demolished in 1967 and was rebuilt in bricks by 1973. At 74 meters, it is the highest church tower in the Rhein-Sieg district .

Furnishing

A special feature of the church is the lack of easting . While the old church building from 1744, the tower of which is still standing, is easted, this was not possible with the new building from 1900 due to the unfavorable arrangement of the property. The 74 m high tower faces south, so the choir and chancel are to the north.

The large, bright religious building has an old, hand-carved Way of the Cross, which was made in St. Ulrich in Val Gardena (South Tyrol) in 1901 , and a modern tabernacle carved from white limestone by the Cologne sculptor Heinz Gernot .

Some of the numerous church windows, which are characterized by expressive colors, are of particular importance. The east transept houses the 1900 Christmas window depicting the birth of Jesus. In the western Marienkapelle there is the Mary window with Mary as the heavenly woman of the Revelation of John and Archangel Michael defeating the dragon and the famous three rabbits window by the artist Paul Weigmann , in the eastern Joseph chapel the Joseph window with Joseph and Mary and the baby Jesus open The Flight into Egypt and the Cecilia Window from 1900 with the patron of church music Cäcilia at the organ, King David and Pope Gregory .

Old graves in the churchyard

The altar - made from parts of the old high altar - contains relics of Saints Agilolf and Paulinus. There are almost life-size statues of the Twelve Apostles on the walls. According to the patronage of the church, Simon (with a saw) and Jude (with a club) are at the forefront on both sides. The clay figures (1907) come from the J. Giersberg factory in Cologne-Kalk and, like the station of the cross, were donated. The figures of the apostles are said to have been painted in color in the past.

Next to the new parish church is the old tower from 1744, to which the Sankt-Johannes-Kapelle (cemetery chapel) was built. The chapel is also used for non-church funeral services. The rectory, built in 1786, is inhabited by the respective Hennef pastor. Since 2009 this has been Pastor Hans-Josef Lahr, who also manages the parish association Geistingen / Hennef / Rott with the three parish churches Sankt Michael in Geistingen, Sankt Simon and Judas in Hennef (city) and Mariä Visitation in Rott with the three branch churches Herz-Jesu in Stossdorf, Sankt Josef in Allner and Sankt Michael in Westerhausen.

Bells

In the years 1929–1931 the Hennef parish church received a four-part bell from the Otto company from Bremen-Hemelingen . Except for the Barbara bell (1931), the bell was destroyed in World War II. Today's church tower houses a total of six bronze church bells: the Barbara bell and five bells from the company Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock from Gescher (all born in 1955). The bells can ring the opening melodies of well-known hymns such as Christ is risen and Now we ask the Holy Spirit to ring. St. Simon and Judas was the first parish church in the Archdiocese of Cologne to ring a six-part bell after the Second World War. Such a bell can only be found in the Rhein-Sieg district in the parish church of Sankt Laurentius in Windeck-Dattenfeld.
