The Savinja (dt. Sann ) is a river in the Slovenian historical region Lower Styria and the statistical region Savinjska . It is a left tributary of the Save . It rises in the Steiner Alps in the Kar of Okrešelj on the border of Carinthia ( Austria ) and flows through the Logar valley and the upper and lower Sanntal to Celje (dt. Cilli ) through the basin of Cilli , then turns to the south and joins Zidani Most (Eng. Steinbrück ) in the main stream of the Save. The headwaters of the river are the highly romantic limestone mountains of the Steiner Alps, which are also named Sannthaler Alps after the river . The uppermost part of the river area lies in the nature reserve Logar Valley (Slov. Logarska dolina ) with many natural beauties, e . B. Rinka waterfalls (90 m) and Palenk (78 m).
In 1311 Heinrich von Carinthia ceded the Sanntal to the Duchy of Styria in a settlement with the Habsburgs .
