Sansevieria ehrenbergii is a species of plant in the genus Sansevieria in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). The specific epithet honors the German biologist Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg , full professor at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . In the language of the Maasai in Kenya , the plant is called "Ol Tupai", occurs frequently in the Olduvai Gorge and thus gave its name to the gorge.

description

Sansevieria ehrenbergii grows stemless or as a stem-forming perennial, succulent plant with rhizomes around 3 centimeters thick . The trunk is upright to 25 centimeters high. The five to nine succulent leaves on a shoot are arranged in two rows, arranged in a fan-like manner, upright or spread out and pressed together at the sides with a triangular groove along the top. The simple leaf blade is 76 to 180 inches long and 3 to 4.5 inches wide. It is dark green with five to twelve blackish green, flat longitudinal grooves. Above the middle it suddenly changes into a 6.5 to 20 millimeter long, very hard, thorny spade tip. The spreading edge is reddish brown with a white membrane-like edge. The leaf surface is slightly rough. In the case of seedlings, the leaves are short and do not initially have two lines.

The paniculate inflorescences are up to two meters high. The panicles are densely populated with four to seven flowers per cluster. The flower stalk is 2 to 4 millimeters long. The bracts are purple to white. They have a 5 to 6.5 millimeter long tube.

The number of chromosomes is .
