Life

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Valencia and titular bishop of Croae on November 20, 1984 . The Archbishop of Valencia, Miguel Roca Cabanellas , ordained him episcopal on December 27th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Gabino Díaz Merchán , Archbishop of Oviedo , and Rafael González Moralejo , Bishop of Huelva . As a motto he chose Spes Mea In Deo .

On May 31, 1988, he was appointed Bishop of Jaén . On July 9th, 2004 he was appointed Archbishop of Mérida-Badajoz by John Paul II .

In 2014, Archbishop García hit the Spanish headlines when priests of the archdiocese turned to Nuncio Renzo Fratini in an extraordinary step and presented their archbishop with a luxurious lifestyle and an expensive renovation of his bishop's palace. This does not suit the need of many families in the Comunidad autónoma Extremadura , where around 30% of adults and 60% of young people are unemployed. The archdiocese issued a statement denying that the priests' allegations were justified.

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on May 21, 2015.
