Santino Bussi (born August 28, 1664 in Bissone , Switzerland ; † February 21, 1736 in Vienna ) was court plasterer in Vienna. He belonged to the leading Viennese artist circle around Johann Bernhard and Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach , Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt and Domenico Martinelli .

Life

Santino Bussi comes from a well-known family of artists from Ticino. His father, the painter Giovanni Francesco Bussi, taught him drawing at an early age, and later he entered the workshop of a plasterer to learn his craft. At the age of twelve he worked in the wake of a group of builders and artists as a traveling plasterer in Milan, Bohemia, Prague and Moravia, until he also worked at Lednice Castle under Johann Adam Andreas von Liechtenstein .

Thereupon Bussi was called to Vienna by the prince in 1695, where he became a citizen, member of the plastering guild and master. Bussi benefited from the brisk construction activity in the capital of the monarchy and later he was also appointed court plasterer. Bussi had a workshop with one or two journeymen and several helpers and was considered a capable master who was gladly commissioned. However, he was rewarded for his work and could therefore be correspondingly generous with his expenses. He once received 6000 Florentine guilders and 70 buckets of wine as wages for furnishing the Liechtenstein City Palace in Bankgasse in Vienna .

Work

He worked in the aristocratic palaces in and around Vienna and received his commissions from Prince Eugene of Savoy (City Palace, today Ministry of Finance; Belvedere Palace ), from Count Kaunitz ( Palais Kaunitz , Herrengasse), from Prince Johann Adam Andreas ( City Palace Liechtenstein , Garden Palace ), among others Liechtenstein ), Leopold Donat Fürst Trautson ( Palais Trautson ), Count Harrach ( Palais Harrach ) and Fürst Schwarzenberg ( Palais Schwarzenberg ), all in Vienna. He often worked with the plasterer Alberto Camesina from Graubünden .

Bussi also equipped many castles, including Libochovice Palace (in Libochowitz , Czech Republic), Libesice Palace ( Leitmeritz ), Czernin Palace (Prague), Clam-Gallas Palace (Prague), Feldsberg Palace ( Valtice , Czech Republic), Austerlitz Palace (Slavkov bei Brno, Czech Republic), Thürnthal Castle (Fels am Wagram, Austria), Prugg Castle (Bruck an der Leitha, Austria) and Mirabell Castle (Salzburg, Austria).

The Schottenkirche and the Peterskirche are among the most famous Viennese sacred buildings in which Bussi was active . He also worked in the collegiate churches in Dürnstein , Melk , Klosterneuburg and in Sankt Florian .
