The Santissima Annunziata , locally and in literature only shortened Annunziata , is a church in the Tuscan city ​​of Arezzo . The current church building was completed in the early 16th century and is considered the most important high Renaissance church building in Arezzo.

Location and name

The church is located on the western edge of the old town of Arezzo on Via Giuseppe Garibaldi , about 400 meters west of Arezzo Cathedral . At the time the previous building was built, it was outside the city fortifications. It got its name and its patronage after the Annunciation , Italian : Santissima Annunziata .

History and building history

A first building at this point dates from the 14th century, it was an oratory that already bore the name of today's church. The present church was essentially built from around 1490/1491. The plans for the new building come from Bartolomeo della Gatta , which is unusual in that this is the only building that has survived from him, della Gatta was a Camaldolese monk and actually only worked as a painter. He died in 1502, after which the works of Antonio da Sangallo d. Ä. Completed by 1517. da Sangallo expanded the plans to include the construction of the eastern porch to the right side of the facade.

Law has not yet received the portal of the previous building, and above which is also a fresco that Spinello Aretino just created for the oratory, dated it around the year 1370. The church has a basilical basic structure, accordingly it has three naves with a raised central nave, the architecture follows Florentine models, for example Brunelleschi's Santo Spirito is called . The side aisles were originally not continuous, but designed as conical chapels , only later they were replaced by the current structure. The crossing is domed, terracotta rosettes are inserted in the pendentives . The support of the triumphal arch towards the choir is also decorated with rosettes .

The significant architecture of the interior is based on the renunciation of frescoes or other pictorial decorations. To the arcade arches supporting pillars are pilasters of the Corinthian order presented. In the vestibule, the arcades, also on the sides, are supported by columns . The naves are spanned by barrel vaults. The architecture is compared with other important buildings from the period, such as Madonna di San Biagio near Montepulciano or Madonna del Cancinaio in Cortona .

The high altar is made of marble , four fluted pilasters, also Corinthian order, structure the structure. It is a work by Rodolfo Sirigatti , created around 1599/1600 or 1601. In the center of the altar is the statue of the Madonna and Child . The terracotta figure is the work of Michele da Firenze and was created around 1433 to 1438.
