A question of honor (alternative title: Ehrensache / Sardische Blood feud ) is a film by Luigi Zampa from 1966. The film is set in Sardinia at a time when blood vengeance was not yet completely outlawed. The premiere took place in the competition at the Berlinale 1966 .

action

The Sardinian day laborer Efesio Mulas has a problem. His fiancée Domenicangela is released on an amnesty after three years of serving in prison for assault. She had attacked him with a sickle at the time because he rejected her feelings for him. Efesio was not interested in the skinny, inconspicuous girl. Her four brothers decided that Efesio and Domenicangela are engaged to protect the girl's honor. Since then they have been monitoring him and preventing any contact with other women.

Domenicangela has grown into a very attractive woman during the years in prison. When she arrives by ship at the port after her arrest, Efesio is charmed by her. She lets him stew now, but after a while agrees to the marriage.

In this Sardinian village there is an age-old vendetta between the Sanna and Porcu families. When the head of the Sannas family, also freed through the amnesty, is murdered and there is some evidence that Efesio was the perpetrator, he has to flee on the day of his wedding. Don Leandro Sanna helps him escape to Milan.

After Don Leandro Sanna's brother kills a Porcu, Don Leandro is frightened and travels to Milan to commission Efisio with the murder of Egidio Porcu. Efisio agrees because he feels lonely in Milan and he longingly wants to see his wife again. However, the murder of Egidio Porcu is committed by an unknown person, as Efisio only has his wife in mind and can now finally catch up with her on the “wedding night”.

In his absence, Efisio is acquitted for lack of evidence and so he can officially return to his village. On arrival he learns that Domenicangela is pregnant. Since no one is allowed to find out about his secret visit, she is believed to be an adulteress. Don Leandro has it in his hand and is trying to get Efisio to kill his wife in order to dispel any suspicion against him. However, Efisio tries to find the real killer. When he opened it, he too was shot. So Efisio has no other option but to kill his wife. As a man who has avenged his honor, he is taken by ship to a prison on the Italian mainland.

criticism

“Well constructed with concessions to machismo, rich in local flavor with a few slips into Sardinian folklore. [...] at the end, however, gets a flash of inspiration leading to the dramatic grotesque. "

- Corriere della Sera

“A biting pastiche developed with dry humor on a misinterpreted insistence on traditional manners and customs, which unexpectedly turns into a tragedy towards the end. Despite all the amusement, the film makes one thoughtful and affected; Played convincingly in the main role, embedded in expressive images. "
