Saruma henryi is a species of plant from the Aristolochiaceae family. It is the only species in the genus Saruma .

description

Saruma henryi is an upright, perennial herbaceous plant . The strong rhizomes have a diameter of about 5 millimeters. The roots are fragrant. The leaves are heart-shaped and alternate. The stems are hairy gray-brown and 0.5 to 1 meter high. The petiole is 3 to 12 inches long and hairy. Leaf blade measures 6 to 15 × 5 to 13 centimeters and is heart-shaped. Its tip is pointed short, its base is heart-shaped.

The flower stalk is 2 to 3.5 inches long and hairy. The flowers are carried by petioles, are solitary and always terminal. The inflorescence is radial symmetry. The sepals are fused at the base. The three sepal lobes are ovate and about 10 × 7 millimeters in size. The three petals are approximately 10 × 8 millimeters in size, yellow to yellow-green, heart-shaped to kidney-shaped, nailed and not overgrown. The 12 stamens are about 2 millimeters in size and arranged in two series. The stamens are inflated and bent at the tip. The anthers are elongated and bent inward. The ovary is medium sized. The 6 carpels are only fused at the base. There are no styluses. The scar runs down the ventral side of the carpel. The fruits are follicles with a permanent calyx and measure 6 to 8 × 4 to 6 millimeters. The seeds are about 3 millimeters in size, triangular-obsolete, convex on one surface and wrinkled on the sides and have a fleshy appendage.

The species blooms from April to July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24, 26 or 52.

Occurrence

The species occurs in China in Gansu , Guizhou , Hubei , Jiangxi , Shaanxi and Sichuan . It grows in dense forests in valleys and on river banks at altitudes of 600 to 1000 meters.

Systematics

The genus Saruma and the species Saruma henryi were first described by Daniel Oliver in 1889 . Saruma henryi is the only species in the genus Saruma .
