Satoshi Saida ( Japanese 斎 田 悟 司 , Saida Satoshi ; born March 26, 1972 in Yokkaichi ) is a Japanese wheelchair tennis player .

Career

Satoshi Saida started wheelchair tennis at the age of 14 and has been in the paraplegic class ever since . In his childhood he lost his left leg to an illness.

He participated in five Paralympic Games in his career . In 1996 he was eliminated in the second round in singles and doubles, and in 2000 he reached the quarter-finals in both competitions. With Shingo Kunieda , he won the gold medal in doubles in 2004 after defeating Michaël Jeremiasz and Lahcen Majdi in straight sets. In the individual he reached the quarterfinals again, as well as four years later . In doubles, he and Kunieda achieved another medal success with bronze. In 2012 they were eliminated in the quarter-finals, while Satoshi Saida lost in the singles in the second round. Saida and Kunieda won the third joint medal with bronze in 2016 .

With Shingo Kunieda, he won three titles in Grand Slam tournaments . In 2006 they won Wimbledon , 2007 the US Open and 2008 the Australian Open . At the Wheelchair Tennis Masters he won the doubles title twice with Martin Legner . In 2003 and 2004 they prevailed against Michaël Jeremiasz and Jayant Mistry . They had also made it to the finals in 2002 and again in 2005.

At the 2010 Para-Asian Games he won the silver medal in the individual competition and the gold medal in the double competition with Shingo Kunieda .

In the world rankings, Satoshi Saida achieved his highest ranking in singles with third place on August 11, 2003. In doubles he topped the ranking for the first time on November 18, 2002.
