Prince Saud ibn Faisal ibn Abd al-Aziz ( Arabic سعود بن فيصل بن عبد العزيز آل سعود, DMG Saʿūd b. Faiṣal b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz Āl Saʿūd ; also Saud Al Faisal ; * January 2, 1940 in Ta'if ; † July 9, 2015 in Los Angeles , California ) was a member of the Saud royal family . He was Foreign Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from 1975 to 2015 .

biography

Prince Saud, son of the future King Faisal ibn Abd al-Aziz and his influential wife Effat Al-Thuniyyan, studied economics at Princeton University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in 1964 . At Princeton University he was a member of the exclusive The Ivy Club.

After returning to Saudi Arabia, he first became an economic advisor in the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and then head of the Petroleum Relations Department at PETROMIN, the umbrella organization for petroleum and mineral resources. On February 22, 1970 he was first Deputy Governor for Planning Matters of PETROMIN and then on June 15, 1971 Deputy Minister for Petroleum and Mineral Resources and thus the closest collaborator of the long-time Minister Ahmed Zaki Yamani .

On October 13, 1975, he was appointed Foreign Minister by decree of King Khalid ibn Abd al-Aziz and held this office until 2015. He was the longest-serving foreign minister in the world and, after King Khalid, also served the kings Fahd ibn Abd al-Aziz , Abdullah ibn Abd al-Aziz and Salman ibn Abd al-Aziz .

In an interview with the Financial Times in March 1998, he spoke about the peace process between Israel and Palestine , the situation in Iraq and Saudi Arabia's relations with the United States .

At the invitation of the Körber Foundation he said in November 2007. Members of the German Bundestag and representatives of the Federal Chancellery , the Foreign Office and selected think tanks about Saudi Arabia's role in the Middle and the Middle East and the regional conflicts.

One day after the speech to the Islamic world by US President Barack Obama on June 4, 2009 in Cairo gave Prince Saud his assessment on this issue in an interview with the US news magazine Newsweek .

On April 29, 2015, he was relieved of his office as Foreign Minister by King Salman. Saud ibn Faisal himself had asked for his release for health reasons.
