Savio Millini (born July 5, 1644 in Rome , † February 10, 1701 ibid) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Savo Millini (sometimes referred to as Savio Mellini) was born on July 5, 1644 in Rome to a Roman family of papal nobility . In his youth he studied at La Sapienza University in Rome, where he received his doctorate in utroque iure on December 17, 1663 and later the subdiaconate (March 17, 1668), the diaconate (March 31, 1668) and on November 18, 1668 the Was ordained a priest . For a few years he held some minor prelate offices, in particular that of the Congregazione del Buon Governo and the prelate of the Congregazione dell'Immunità . His career took off in 1674 when he was appointed secretary of the Congregazione del Buon Governo , which oversaw the administration of the local finances of the Papal States.

On June 1, 1675, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Spain and Titular Archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia (June 17), and on June 28 of the same year as Papal Assistant to the Throne . Mellini's nunciature lasted from 1675 to 1685 and was the longest nunciature in Spain in the 17th century . It took place in a context of relatively relaxed relations between the Spanish monarchy and the Holy See, although Mellini had some sensitive issues to clarify, including the diplomatic concessions sought in Rome from Spain and the other European powers. Despite the success of the nunciature, Mellini found himself in a marginal position after his return to Rome and played a negligible political role.

Pope Innocent XI. elevated him to cardinal in the consistory of September 1, 1681 . As a cardinal priest , Santa Maria del Popolo received the title church on August 12, 1686 .

On December 22, 1681 he became bishop of the diocese of Orvieto with the personal title of archbishop . He took part in the conclave of 1689 , in which Pope Alexander VIII was elected.

Millini decided on December 12, 1689 for the titular church of San Pietro in Vincoli . He took part in the conclave of 1691 , in which Pope Innocent XII. was chosen. From March 10, 1692 to January 2, 1693 he was treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals . On March 17, 1694 he was transferred to the dioceses of Nepi and Sutri with the personal title of archbishop . In 1700 he took part in the conclave that Clement XI. elected to the Pope.

He died in Rome on February 10, 1701 at 7 p.m. in his palace near the Piazza SS. XII Apostoli, where he had last lived. His body was laid out in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome, where the burial took place on February 12 in the family crypt there.

Savo Millini was the uncle of Cardinal Taddeo Luigi dal Verme .
