Schönteichen was a Saxon municipality in the Bautzen district that existed from March 1, 1994 to December 31, 2018. It was located in West Lusatia , belonged to the Kamenz-Schönteichen administrative community and was incorporated into Kamenz . In Schönteichen there were 2,095 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2017) on an area of 45.05 km². The phone code was 03578 and 035797 for the Schönbach district, the postcode 01920.

Geography and traffic

The community was around five kilometers northwest of Kamenz at an altitude of around 220 m. Foothills of the West Lusatian hills and mountains rise in the south , the north belongs to the natural spatial unit of the Königsbrück-Ruhlander Heiden , in the east the Upper Lusatian heath and pond area borders. There is an ultralight airfield south of the Liebenau district . The federal road 97 runs northwest of the municipality .

history

The discovery of a Bronze Age burial ground near Cunnersdorf proves the early settlement of the area. The first documentary mention of individual villages in the community took place on May 19, 1225. The places and place names are partly of Sorbian and partly of German origin. The villages of Cunnersdorf and Petershain were probably named after their founder. In 1429, during the Hussite Wars , the area was badly damaged by raiding troops. The Thirty Years' War and the plague in 1680/1681 hit the towns hard. During the Wars of Liberation , the area was again hit by troops passing through. In the course of the Saxon municipal area reform , the five municipalities of Biehla, Brauna , Cunnersdorf , Hausdorf and Schönbach merged to form Schönteichen in March 1994 .

On January 1, 2019, the community of Schönteichen was dissolved and the places belonging to it were incorporated into the city of Kamenz.
