The steamship Schaarhörn was built in 1908 at the Hamburg-Steinwerder shipyard and machine factory as a "bearing steamer" and put into service by the building deputation of the Hamburg Senate . The Schaarhörn is owned by the Hamburg Maritime Foundation and can be chartered.
history
After its commissioning in the city of Hamburg as a direction finder and for representation purposes in 1908, it was used as an auxiliary minesweeper during the First World War . After the First World War it was launched until 1925. She then resumed her original activity as a direction finding and inspection ship , now for the Cuxhaven Waterways Authority and from 1949 for the Cuxhaven Waterways and Shipping Authority . At the end of the Second World War she was involved in the evacuation of refugees from Swinoujscie , Pillau , Hela , Stolpmünde and Sassnitz . In 1973 the ship was sold to the United Kingdom ( Newcastle upon Tyne ) and used there as a catering ship until 1979.
After a further lay-in period , the Schaarhörn was bought back in 1990 by a community facility from Hamburg merchants. In 1993 she was the first ship to be included in the Hamburg list of monuments . It was restored from 1990 to 1995 as a job creation measure for young people under the supervision of Germanischer Lloyds . Since 1995 it has been operated as a traveling museum by a volunteer crew.
The ship is named after the island of Scharhörn, which belongs to Hamburg, at the mouth of the Elbe and the North Sea .
