The first World Cup tournament was held in April 1988. Former world champion Mikhail Botvinnik was invited as a guest , who attended the opening and closing ceremonies. The draw was made using an aviary with 18 racing pigeons and 18 horseshoes. Each pigeon carried a slip of paper with the name of a participant. With the help of the pigeons, the participants were called one after the other, and then selected one of the remaining horseshoes, in which the start number was. In the supporting program of the tournament was on the Grand-Place , a live chess set in which the world champion Garry Kasparov and Timman after 20 trains draw parted.
The representative of the local organizer was Luc Winants. Rafael Waganjan had to resign after four rounds after learning of the death of his younger brother and therefore traveled to his hometown Yerevan. Waganjan's results so far, four draw games against Tal, Portisch, Beliavsky and Timman were not counted. To compensate, the participants in the tournament, with the exception of winants, received an additional half point for the Grand Prix ranking.
The games Korchnoi - Timman 1: 0, Grünfeld-Indisch and Sokolov - Portisch 1: 0, closed defense of the Spanish game were chosen by a jury of experts to be the third and ninth best of the Chessinformator 45.

This game was voted the best of Chess Informator 45. The magazine also recorded Kasparov's winning games with Black against Beliavsky in the Grünfeld-Indian Defense, with White against Sokolov in the Flohr-Mikenas system of the English opening and with White against Andersson in the exchange variant of the Queen's Gambit as fourth, fifth or seventh best out. The victory of Nogueiras with Black against Hjartarson in the Winawer variant of the French Defense was chosen as the eighth best game.
