The place has been documented since the 2nd century.

At the time of the Crusades , the Templars maintained a castle in Schefar'am, which they called Le Saffran (also Sapharanum; Saphar Castrum; Castrum Zafetanum ). The castle secured the road between Acre and Nazareth.

On July 7, 1187, an army of Sultan Saladin occupied the castle and used it as a base for his relief attacks during the siege of Acre (1189–1191) . In the course of the crusade of Frederick II , the Christians got the castle back in 1229 on the basis of an agreement. The possession was also confirmed to them in armistice agreements by Sultan Baibars I in 1271 and Sultan Qalawun in 1283. The castle was finally conquered by the Muslim Mamluks in 1291 at the latest .

The ruins of the donjon are preserved from the castle to this day, the locals call it al Burj (Arabic, "the tower"). However, the ruin is falling into disrepair and in poor condition.

In 2005, the city was the scene of an attack by the assassin Eden Natan-Zada , who killed four bystanders.
