Schenkenau is a wasteland in the Upper Franconian community of Itzgrund in the Coburg district .
geography
Schenkenau is located about 16 kilometers southwest of Coburg , north of the confluence of the Alster and Itz , on an island. The property consists of the castle and a former mill.
history
Schenkenau was first mentioned in a document in 1258. Ludwig I von Rotenhan built the castle around 1250, probably a moated castle, which was the family seat until the 15th century. In 1525 the castle was destroyed and rebuilt during the peasant wars . In the middle of the 18th century, the gentlemen von Greiffenclau zu Vollrath initiated the conversion to a steam-powered cotton mill. The Prieger family turned the mill on the Itz into an art mill in 1778 . It was shut down in 1955 and power generation began in 1961. Since 1973 the castle complex has been used as a holiday farm.
In the 19th century Schenkenau was incorporated into Schottenstein . In 1862 Schenkenau was incorporated into the newly created Bavarian district office in Staffelstein .
In 1875 Schenkenau had four residents and five buildings. The children went to school in Untermerzbach, one kilometer away. In 1925 the hamlet had 22 residents and 5 houses. The place belonged to the parish of the Protestant parish church in Untermerzbach . In 1987 the wasteland comprised five residents and a residential building with two apartments.
On July 1, 1972, the Staffelstein district was dissolved. Since then Schenkenau has belonged to the Coburg district . In the course of the Bavarian territorial reform , Schottenstein lost its independence as a municipality on May 1, 1978 and, like its district Schenkenau, became part of the municipality of Itzgrund.
