The Schlattein rises east of the village of the same name on the southwest slope of the 604 m high Tannenbühl in the municipality of Floß.

It flows 240 m to the west down the slope. Then it turns to the northwest and flows in a flat arc on the northeast side around the village of Schlattein. From the right it takes in two unnamed streams that flow down from the western slopes of the Tannenbühl and the Kohlbühl. To the northwest of Schlattein, another unnamed stream from the northeast slope of the Hasenbühl flows into it from the left.

800 m northwest of Schlattein it changes from the municipality of Floß to the municipality of Plößberg. The Schlattein passes under the State Road 2172 and flows along the southwestern edge of the village of Wildenau . In Wildenau, 3.38 km after its source, the Schlattein takes on the Ödbach from the right. Now it swings to the west and passes the wasteland Waffenhammer 1 km west of Wildenau .

570 m west of Waffenhammer the Schlattein changes from the municipality of Plößberg to the municipality of Püchersreuth. 150 m west of the municipality boundary, 1.83 km after the mouth of the Ödbach, the Beidlbach flows from the right into the Schlattein. now turns to the Schlattein southwest and flows through a narrow gorge cut between the 480 m high mountain plate in the northwest and the 493 m high altitude in Südoasten. She passes the village of Auerberg on its western side.

At the exit of the breakthrough valley, the Schlattein picks up a stream flowing down from the Großer Plattenweiher from the right. After another 450 m, 1.84 km after the mouth of the Beidlbach, the Auerbach joins the Schlattein from the left.

Past Rotzenmühle and Stöberlhof , the Schlattein flows strongly in a meandering south-westerly direction. 2.8 km after the mouth of the Auerbach, the Ilsenbach flows into the Schlattein from the left.

Now the Schlattein swings west and after a further 1.66 km flows into the Waldnaab at the Wöllershofer ponds. From the mouth of the Ilsenbach into the Schlattein to the mouth of the Schlattein into the Waldnaab, the Schlattein runs on the border between the municipality of Püchersreuth and the municipality of Störnstein.
