description

Habit and leaves of Schlegelia parasitica

Vegetative characteristics

Schlegelia species are shrubs , woody climbing plants , lianas or small trees that can grow terrestrially or epiphytically . The wood does not show any abnormal vascularization, the trunks are mostly round.

Small stipules are formed, which mostly lie on the branches. The opposite arranged leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The relatively thick, rounded petioles are often articulated at their base. The simple leaf blades are often leathery, the leaf margin is entire. There is pinnate veins .

Inflorescences and flowers

The terminal or lateral inflorescences are panicle , cluster- shaped or racemose . The inflorescence shafts are usually woody. In addition to the flower stalks, the inflorescence axes often form small, inconspicuous bracts .

The hermaphroditic flowers have a double flower envelope . the almost leathery calyx is tubular or cup-shaped and is completely or irregularly divided into small calyx teeth. It is permanent and is torn open by the fruit. The white to pink or red, rarely yellow, crown is bell-shaped to narrowly tubular, bare on the outside and the inside of the corolla lobes is covered with small, glandular scales. The five crown lobes are rounded.

The four fertile stamens are in two unequal pairs. They start in the lower half of the corolla tube and do not protrude beyond the crown. The anthers are bare, their counters are spread out. Usually a small staminodium is formed. The ovary is two-sided, occasionally it is only one-sided towards the tip. The placentation is centered on the septum of each ovary compartment, there are many ovules . The simple stylus ends with a two or rarely three columnar scar .

Fruits and seeds

The mostly spherical berries have a hard, crusty, non-cracking pericarp . The seeds are embedded in a “ pulp ”. The relatively small, narrow seeds are angled and not winged.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Schlegelia was established in 1844 by Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel in Botanische Zeitung (Berlin) , Volume 2, 46, page 785. The generic name Schlegelia honors the German zoologist and naturalist Hermann Schlegel (1804–1884). Type species is Schlegelia violacea Griseb. as a synonym Schlegelia lilacina Miq. A synonym for Schlegelia Miq. is Dermatocalyx Oerst.

Depending on the author, the Schlegelia genus contains around 23 species:
