features

The Schan has an elongated and laterally flattened body and like all representatives of the slimy fish has no scales . It reaches a body length of 18 centimeters . The head is large and not equipped with tentacles as in other species , the large eyes are set high on the sides of the head, and the mouth extends under the eyes. The coloration can vary widely: as a rule, the body is brown to olive in color with 6 to 7 crossbars and white dots arranged in rows.

The dorsal fin extends from the base of the head to just before the transition to the one-piece tail fin and has an indentation in the area of the transition between the 11 to 12 hard and 18 to 20 limb or soft rays. The thread-like pelvic fins are throaty, so they lie in front of the pectoral fins and consist of one hard and three soft rays. The paired pectoral fins have 13 fin rays and the anal fin 2 hard rays and 19 soft rays. The swim bladder is absent from all slimy fish.

distribution

The Schan can be found in the coastal areas of the north-east Atlantic from Norway to Morocco including the North Sea and in the Mediterranean .

Way of life

The fish live in the surf area on rocky coasts and in tide pools as bottom fish at depths of up to eight meters , whereby they retreat to deeper areas in winter . When threatened, the Schan hides in algae stocks and crevices. It feeds on small, bottom -living invertebrates such as barnacles , small crabs such as amphipods and snails .

The females spawn from April to August in usually three spawning seasons and lay the eggs under stones and in crevices in the tidal area. The eggs are sticky and yellow in color, they are 0.8 to 1.2 millimeters in size . The males guard the clutches of several females and fan them, so they practice active brood care . After six to eight weeks , the fry hatch with a length of five millimeters. The total service life of the Schan can be more than ten years .
