Castle

The Castle (also: Castle Biederthal ) is situated in the Swiss municipality of castle in Leimental .

location

The Höhenburg complex is located on the eastern spur of the Schönenberg rock ridge above the village of Burg and its extensive building complex dominates the village.

history

There is uncertainty about the beginnings of the castle. The oldest parts of the complex date back to the middle of the 13th century and it can be assumed that the mention of a Biederthal castle in the 12th century refers to the ruins of Alt-Biederthal on the same rock ridge. As a Habsburg property, the castle was transferred to a branch of the Ratolsdorf family, who were wealthy in the rear of the Blauengebiet. Biederthal Castle, today's castle, was built in 1250 under the von Biederthal family of the Ratolsdorf family. In 1269 the Bishop of Basel acquired the castle and first lent it to the Lords of Biederthal until 1392, after which the Lords of Wessenberg were enfeoffed with the feast. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, the Wessenberg team redesigned the medieval castle into a modern palace.

The castle was sold to private customers in 1810 and is still privately owned and not open to the public today.
