architecture
The castle essentially looks the same as it did when it was built. On its south side you have a view of the Loire and the Mauges and Pays de Retz landscapes . The castle is surrounded by a three hectares large park and a 17-hectare vineyard surrounded. Louis de Funès planted a rose garden, which is no longer preserved today.
Clermont Castle exhibits three essential characteristics of the architectural style of the time of Louis XIII. on:
- Soft-looking shapes thanks to the use of pink bricks and masonry
- the main building has several separate slate roofs
- the middle part of the building dominates the construction and includes the main staircase
history
The de Funès family had inherited part of the castle from an aunt, a Countess of Maupassant, and bought it in full in 1967. It was built by the Chenu de Clermont family, a family of senior military officials. René Chenu (1599–1672) was governor of the cities of Oudon and Champtoceaux for a long time . His son Hardy Chenu (1621–1683) was responsible for the fortifications , cities, castles and fortified cities of Brittany .
The Chenus were vassals of the House of Condé , which owned many properties in western France. René Chenu was a contemporary and loyal ally of Henri II de Bourbon, prince de Condé . The castle was built shortly after the Battle of Rocroi , in which Henri's son Louis secured the throne of Louis XIV and thus earned a sizeable reward.
Well-known residents of the castle included Émile Souvestre , Marie Dorval , William Turner , Jules Sandeau and Louis de Funès .
