Gellenau Castle ( Polish : Pałac w Jeleniowie ) is a ruinous castle in Jeleniów (German Gellenau ) in the powiat Kłodzki ( Glatz district ) in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship in Poland . Historically it belonged to the rule Hummel in the County of Glatz .

history

"Geylnaw", which was first mentioned in 1350, was located in the place of what would later become the castle, a Vorwerk "Kelnow" occupied in 1477, which was sold to the city of Reinerz in 1595 after the Hummel reign was dissolved. At the same time it was raised to a free judge's property and a short time later sold with all accessories to Kaspar Alten from Hermannseifen near Trautenau . Since he was involved in the Bohemian class uprising in 1618 , his property was confiscated by the emperor in 1623 and initially handed over to the Glatzer Jesuit College for enjoyment . In 1625 Archduke Karl of Austria handed the Gellenau estate over to Baron Carl von Strasoldo. After Caspar Alten's return to the Catholic religion and payment of a fine of 420 guilders, he received his possessions back in 1627. In 1643 he was followed by his son Kaspar Josef von Alten, and in 1693 his son Johann Heinrich von Alten. Since he died without heirs, his sister Anna Magdalena von Ullersdorf took over the estate, who in 1745 bequeathed it to her son, the Königgrätz canon Johann Georg von Ullersdorf. In 1748 the castle and estate came to Franz Anton von Haugwitz auf Pischkowitz .

In 1788, the Gellenau Castle and Estate were acquired by the Judicial Councilor Franz Bernhard von Mutius , who was followed by his nephew Major Carl von Mutius. Around 1850 he expanded the palace with the new building of the east wing in neo-renaissance style and the “Carlshof” estate, as well as the large palace park. During his lifetime he gave the castle and estate to his son Rittmeister Hans von Mutius. He had a bronze deer sculpture set up in front of the castle .

During the Second World War , the castle and estate were administered by the later writer Dagmar von Mutius . She wrote about the end of the war until the expulsion of the family in 1946 the novel "lightning. Chronicle of a Silesian Province 1945/46 ”.

After the transition to Poland, the castle initially remained uninhabited after 1946. In 1963 it was converted into a rest home and in the 1970s it was converted into a hotel . The baroque wing was damaged in a roof fire. After that, it was left to decay.

Building

The original building consisted of a Gothic core, which was expanded in the Baroque style and to which a new late Classicist building was finally added.
