Gołuchów Castle

The Gołuchów Castle in Gołuchów in pleszew county in the Greater Poland Voivodeship since 1951 branch of Poznań National Museum .

history

The fortified early Renaissance building was built from 1550 to 1560 by order of Rafał Leszczyński (around 1526–1592), the Starost of Radziejów and voivodes of Brześć Kujawski , a Calvinist . Converted to Catholicism on behalf of Wacław Leszczyński († 1628), the Grand Crown Chancellor, Voivode of Kalisz , the castle was enlarged from 1600 to 1619 and converted into a magnificent residence .

The Leszczynskis sold the castle to the Suszko family in 1695. The next owners: Górowskis, Chlebowskis, Swinarskis, Suchorzewskis neglected the castle. In 1856 (or 1853) Adam Titus Graf Działyński (1797–1861) bought the ruins as the future family seat on the occasion of the marriage of his son Jan Kanty Graf von Działyński with the art lover Izabella Działyńska . Because of his support for the January uprising , Jan Kanty Działyński was forced to emigrate . His wife had the residence thoroughly rebuilt from 1875 to 1885. The building sketches were partly provided by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and the Polish architect Zygmunt Gorgolewski, creator of the Lviv Opera Theater . Viollet-le-Duc's student Maurice Auguste Obradou provided the final design. French artists were also at work during the renovation: the sculptor Charles Biberon and painter Louis Breugnot. The architecture showed influences from the castles of the Loire , such as steep slate roofs and slender chimneys. During the renovation, the oldest part of the castle was removed in order to open the arcade courtyard to the outside. New marble chimneys from Italy , France and Spain were installed. The windows received decorative frames.

The castle is located in the middle of a 162 hectare park, designed by Adam Kubaszewski. The mausoleum of the castle's founder, Countess Izabella Działyńska, who died in France in 1899 , was also built in the park .

Countess Działyńska founded the Majorate of Princes Czartoryski with its seat in Gołuchów in 1893 , with the condition that the collections remain indivisible and generally accessible. The foundation existed continuously until September 1939. Until 1939, Gołuchów Palace was one of the largest private museums in Europe . During the Second World War , many works of art were confiscated and abducted by the occupying forces. Some items came back only after 1956, indirectly via the Soviet Union .

Since 1951 the castle has been a branch of the National Museum in Poznan . The collections include a. antique vases , acquired by Jan Działyński from the excavations in Noli , Capua and Naples . Part of the collections consists of items on loan from the Poznan Museum. The forestry museum is located in the courtyard building.

The castle was registered in the register of architectural monuments of the Greater Poland Voivodeship on May 29, 1952 under As 43 and on September 9, 1954 under class IV-73/166/54.

The Działyński mausoleum was registered on December 14, 1992 under 657 / A in the register of architectural monuments of the Greater Poland Voivodeship.
