Horšovský Týn Castle (German Castle Bischofteinitz ) is located in Horšovský Týn in Okres Domažlice in the Czech Republic .

history

The possessions of the Prague bishops was probably made by Burgundian models, which were mediated by Bayern after 1258 Bischofteinitz a castle with a palace and the Trinity Chapel, which was built into a tower and castle gates on the foundations of an earlier extensive fortifications which for Part are preserved. Also deep cellars and splendidly vaulted halls of the former palace building of the bishops were exposed. The huge central pillar of the vault carries the weight of the old palace of the Prague bishops and the later Renaissance castle . The archbishop of Prague, Ernst von Pardubitz, initiated the first reconstruction of the castle area in the middle of the 14th century.

From 1539 to 1620 the lordship and the town of Bischofteinitz belonged to members of Lord Lobkowitz von Hassenstein in inheritance . Wilhelm von Lobkowitz was sentenced to death and confiscated his property for his participation in the Prague uprising in 1621. In 1623 the Styrian count and imperial diplomat Maxmilian von Trauttmansdorff acquired the confiscate for a small sum. The castle and the lordship remained in the possession of the Princes Trauttmansdorff until they were expropriated in 1945. From 1656, Hostouň and Puclice also belonged to their property in Teinitz .

At the end of the 16th century the castle was rebuilt in the Renaissance style. At that time, master builder Agostino Galli raised the palace in Bischofteinitz for Johann the Younger von Lobkowitz , leveled the area in the inner courtyard and constructed a new palace building at the same time as the Lobkowitz Palace in front of the Prague Castle (later Palais Salm and today's Palais Schwarzenberg). At the beginning of the 17th century, a south wing with inner courtyard arcades was added. There are few buildings from the second half of the 16th century that have been preserved in such a stylish manner to the present day.

Further renovations were carried out at the end of the 19th century according to plans by the architect Josef Schulz . Currently, conservation work in the preservation of monuments is important, including the removal of the overpainting by the restorers after 1880.
