The Schmelzteich is an artificially created lake in the 16th century in the spa district of the Lower Saxon town of Bad Sachsa am Süd Harz . He is the center of the vital park .

history

The melting pond is mentioned as early as 1550 and is one of the oldest " dams " in the Harz . Unfortunately, it has not yet been proven that it was built to supply water to an " ore smelter ", although there are many indications that it was.

At the end of the 19th century, the west bank with Bismarckstrasse was continuously built on. There are some very beautiful historic villas here , one of which is now part of the five-star Hotel Romantischer Winkel , which opened in 1978 . The Kurhaus , built in 1962/63, is on the east side of the Schmelzteichdamm .

On July 5, 1910, the Kommerzienrat Friedrich Wilhelm Reinhardt (* 1844 in Sachsa ; † 1920 in Leipzig ), an honorary citizen and great benefactor of his hometown, announced that he wanted to extend the melt pond at his own expense and beautify it through dredging, a private initiative which then cost him 12,000 gold marks .

As early as 1903, a reed- roofed birch house was built as a boat station on the Schmelzteich dam , which had to be renewed in 1924. It was demolished in 1956 because it was in disrepair, and the dam was given a new concrete wall , while a new boathouse on Bismarckstrasse was installed.

The pond is about 320 meters long, 130 meters wide and has an area of 7 hectares. It is mainly fed by tributaries from the Ravensberg massif when the snow melts . It is still part of flood protection today . The dam of the melt pond is around 130 meters long and a little more than five meters high. A weir in the middle of the dam regulates the water runoff via a small cascade in the historical part of the spa park .

There are numerous relaxation and park benches on the pond dam and on many sections of the bank. In the course of the transformation of the spa park into a vital park , a small island for water birds was created at the main tributary (see photo).

The melt pond is home to big carp just waiting to be fed.

A few years ago, the old fountain on the north side of the Schmelzteich was replaced by new illuminated water features on the south side.

leisure

In the summer months there is the possibility of boat trips, rowing boats and pedal boats can be rented at the boathouse . In winter, the melt pond is used as a natural ice rink .

Since 2014, the Outddoorfriend team has been offering flights over the Schmelzteich with a 140 meter long and 30 km / h fast Flying Fox cable car. The starting point is Bismarckstraße, right by the Hotel Romantischer Winkel.

In the summer of 2016, the first White Dinner in Bad Sachsa was celebrated on the Schmelzteichdamm , with around 100 visitors and live music.

Behind the large Schmelzteichwiese there is some outdoor fitness equipment , a mini golf course and three tennis courts . About 1.5 km from the Schmelzteich, in the direction of Ravensberg , is the Märchengrund and the Harzfalkenhof .
