Schmiedrait is one of the highest places in the Austrian Burgenland . In the foothills of the Bucklige Welt , the place is located on the border triangle Burgenland, Lower Austria and Styria , at an altitude of 658 m above sea level. A. According to the census of May 15, 2001, Schmiedrait has 136 mostly Protestant residents. Schmiedrait has an area of 380 hectares. Apart from the three-country stone in the Willersdorfer Gorge, the landmark of the place is the evangelical church, which was built around 1850 and can be seen from afar. It is the highest church in Burgenland.
Schmiedrait is one of the five villages in the Oberschützen municipality in the Oberwart district .
The first written mention of the place took place in 1388 under the name Symdroch and 1392 Simidrouch . The church and school, visible from afar, were built between 1848 and 1855. In 1935 the Schmiedrait volunteer fire brigade was founded , and in 1995 the newly built fire station was put into operation. Schmiedrait used to be one of the highest border towns in Hungary (name at that time: Határfő = border head).
