The Schwerin is a day trip ship operated by the Weisse Flotte (Schwerin) shipping company on the Schwerin Lakes in Mecklenburg.

Building history

The 1979 built ship with the serial number 60 ( GDR internal registration number P-122) belongs to the inland passenger ship (BiFa) type III series , the so-called “bird of prey class”, a project of the “ VEB Yachtwerft Berlin” in Köpenick . Series production began in 1976 at VEB Yachtwerft Berlin (58 ships) and VEB Elbewerften Boizenburg / Roßlau (2 ships); With a total of 60 ships, the “birds of prey class” was one of the largest shipbuilding series in the GDR. The main dimensions of this type of ship were designed in such a way that it could be used on almost all inland waterways in the GDR and could be brought to closed waters by land. The hydraulically lowerable wheelhouse made it possible to pass under low bridges.

The hull of the Schwerin was welded together from panels prefabricated in the VEB Yachtwerft Berlin in the Roßlau operating part of the VEB Elbewerften Boizenburg / Roßlau. It has two watertight transverse bulkheads . The thickness of the outer skin panels is 6 mm in the area of the machine foundations and the fuel bunker, otherwise 5 mm. The hull was finished in mid-June 1979 and was then loaded onto a special pontoon and towed to the main plant in Boizenburg . He arrived there on June 19, 1979 and was put on slipway . On June 25, 1979, further construction began up to a dead weight of 40 tons . The ship ( hull number 368) was lifted from the stack on August 3, 1979 with the docking crane and then completed at the equipment pier in Boizenburg.

Technical specifications

Three-sided oar type Jenkel

The ship was originally 28.50 m (overall, 27.30 m in the construction waterline ) and 5.10 m wide (4.88 m frame ), had empty m 0.90 and 1.10 m loaded draft and a side height of 1.35 m and displaced 74.99 tons . The load capacity was 61.5 tons. A 6-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine of the type 6 VD 14.5 from the company "Dieselmotorenwerk Schönebeck" (DMW Schönebeck) with 122 hp enables a top speed of 18 km / h (9.7 knots ) via one screw ; however, the normal speed in regular traffic is only 15.0 km / h (8.1 kn) and in round traffic it is only 10.0 km / h (5.4 kn). It is controlled via a Jenckel three-surface rudder. A 59 HP auxiliary diesel engine type VD 14.5 from DMW Schönebeck provides the internal energy supply. The passenger equipment consisted of two passenger areas on the main deck with 24 seats in the bow saloon and 50 seats in the rear passenger area as well as an upper deck or sun deck with 40 open seats.

Mission history

The Schwerin was completed on 21 September 1979 and 4 October 1979 on the Dömitz -Schleuse that Elde and Störkanal to Schwerin transferred. After a few preparatory test drives on October 7, 1979, the official handover and commissioning by the "VE (K) Nahverkehrsbetrieb Schwerin / White Fleet Division" took place. As the flagship of the fleet, the Schwerin then carried out scheduled and round trips on the Schwerin lakes in the summer months.

After the reunification of Germany , the ships of the Schwerin White Fleet were sold by the Treuhandanstalt to private owners in 1992 , the " Weisse Flotte Fahrgastschifffahrt Schwerin GmbH ". In 1994 they had the ship lengthened by around 10 meters to a total of 39.54 m (over everything) at the Berlin shipyard of Deutsche Binnenwerften GmbH (DBW), formerly VEB Yachtwerft Berlin, and the interior fittings were renovated and modernized. This increased the passenger capacity to 120 seats below deck and 112 seats on the sun deck. The Schwerin is the only ship in this series that has been extended in Germany. With a crew of two men and two catering employees, the Schwerin has been sailing the Schwerin lakes and waters again since then. Until 2001 she was still the flagship of the fleet.
