action

In the eastern United States , a virus-mutated zombie breaks out of a laboratory after tearing up the caretaker and a researcher. Around the same time, three high school students, Ben, Carter and Augie, the only members of the local Boy Scout group along with their leader Rogers, are trying to recruit new members. The three have been friends since childhood and are part of the boy scout group. However, for some time now, Ben and especially Carter have had the desire to get out and devote themselves more to the girls, not least because they are always laughed at because of their uniforms. But since Augie lost his father two years ago and has been a boy scout ever since, they have so far not been able to bring themselves to do it. A scout camp in the forest is planned for the evening , where Augie will receive a long-awaited, special scout badge.

On their way home through the woods, Ben and Carter run over a deer. While they are changing the flat front tire, Jeff appears with his Jeep, along with Chloe and Carter's sister Kendall. Jeff makes fun of the two boy scouts as always. Ben, who is in love with Kendall, wants to show her the dead stag, but it has disappeared. Carter is not interested in this because there is a big, secret party that is supposed to take place that evening and he has talked the address off Jeff. Ben has a remorse about offending Augie, but Carter persuades him to come with him as soon as the other two fall asleep at camp.

In the afternoon, leader Rogers is on his way to the camp in the forest when he is suddenly attacked by the now mutated zombie deer. He can kill him, but is immediately attacked by the zombie from the laboratory. Carter is now paying a drunk guy to get them beer in a supermarket for the party. This only succeeds when Denise helps them, who is of legal age and works in a strip club . When they arrived at Augie's camp, the three friends wonder about their leader's absence. When Augie sleeps, Ben and Carter sneak away. The disappointed Augie notices this, but lets her go. In town, Ben and Carter discover that everything is dead. Also the bouncer of the strip club is not in his place, so they take the opportunity and sneak in. Inside they are attacked by the stripper Amber and the doorman, both mutated into zombies, but Denise shows up with a rifle and saves them. Meanwhile, Augie is looking for her leader Rogers in his house. This is now also a zombie and attacks Augie, who can torch him, knock him down and tie him up.

Ben, Carter and Denise are now being pursued by a horde of zombies and are looking for protection in the police station. A note on the door tells them that the city has since been evacuated. When the zombie horde is on their heels, they lock themselves in a prison cell in the basement and are thus protected from access by the undead. Then Augie arrives, who recognizes Ben's car, distracts the horde and frees the friends. On their escape, they meet the drunk, now a zombie, with whom Augie sings a pop song in a duet until Corporal Reeves appears and shoots the zombie. They ask the soldier to take them to the party and rescue their friends, but discover that Jeff has purposely given them the wrong address. Reeves transforms too, but Denise can finish him off. Via his radio, they learn that the military is planning an area bombing over the city in two hours . It occurs to Carter that his sister may have written the correct address in her diary, whereupon they drive to his house. Here they are attacked by the beastly neighbor Ms. Fielder and other zombies. At the last moment, Ben finds Kendall's diary and they can use a trampoline to escape over the wall and into Ms. Fielder's house. Chased by Ms. Fielder's zombie cats, they flee in the neighbor's car and knock down boy scout leader Rogers on the street, who was able to break free.

Denise breaks up with the others to get help. The three friends speak out and renew their friendship. Then they make a detour via the local hardware store, where they use their Boy Scout knowledge to make weapons from tools and garden utensils. Just as they arrive at the old leisure center, the place of the party, it is stormed by a horde of zombies. You can clear numerous zombies out of the way, but many of those present have been bitten and mutate as well, like Chloe and Jeff, who are taken down by Carter and Ben. The friends get the survivors out of the building and lock it from the inside. Then they take refuge in the sports hall and barricade themselves. Augie unpacks a homemade bomb with which he wants to save her from a fate as a zombie. When the zombies break open the door, Denise appears from the garbage chute through which they can save themselves at the last moment, just before the bomb explodes and the zombie horde blows up. At the end of the trash chute, they land in trash bags and see leader Rogers limping towards them. At this moment, more soldiers appear and blow up Rogers with a hand grenade.

Eventually they are taken to a military camp outside the evacuated zone, where Ben takes heart and kisses Kendall. During the credits, Rogers' severed head, lying in the trash, announces the end of the film.

background

Filming began on May 8, 2014 in Los Angeles .

On May 30, 2014, the production company Paramount Pictures announced a release date of March 13, 2015 for the United States. However, this was later revised on October 14, 2014 and postponed to October 30, 2015.

In July 2015, Paramount announced that it had signed a contract with several North American cinema chains that stipulated that Scouts vs. Zombies and the Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension, which is also distributed by Paramount, are to be offered digitally as video-on-demand as part of an experiment a short time after the cinema release . In return, Paramount offered the cinemas a profit sharing option. Many cinema chains agreed, including AMC , National Amusements , Alamo Drafthouse, and Cineplex (Canada). However, since several larger chains also declined the offer, the films were shown in only approx. 1350 North American cinemas (cf. approx. 3000 for the earlier Paranormal Activity films). Video-on-demand was released 17 days after the day the films were shown in fewer than 300 theaters in North America. The reason for the attempt and the associated intervention in the film exploitation is assumed to be the miserable box-office result from MGM's Hot Tub Time Machine 2 (2015). A chairman of Paramount Pictures explained that Paramount's strategy is to try to compensate for the lack of forecasted box office revenues for the two films early on with a digital release.

The film just missed its budget of $ 15.0 million with worldwide box office revenues of $ 14.9 million.

criticism

The film received rather negative reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes , Scouts vs. Zombies got a 45% rating based on 74 reviews and an average rating of 4.7 / 10. On Metacritic it is rated 32 out of 100 points, based on 17 reviews.

" Scout vs. Zombies - Handbook for the Zombie Apocalypse is - according to the title - a crazy dirty B-movie and offers an entertaining fireworks display for genre fans. "

- Thomas Vorwerk, filmstarts.de

" Scouts vs. Zombies doesn't break the genre corset, but remains a humorous, carefree youthful film until the end, which also delights adult viewers. For example, with the excellent effects of Tony Gardner, one of the leading specialists in this field: Instead of blood fountains from the computer, he relies on manual labor. The result is impressive, for example when Augie is chased through the apartment by a group of zombie cats, represented by adorable, remote-controlled dolls. Even if “Scouts vs. Zombies "is first and foremost a comedy, a terrifying realization lurks in it: When a living dead begins to sing along with Britney Spears'" Baby One More Time ", you know that you will be followed by a few catchy tunes to the grave and beyond."

- Markus Keuschnigg, Die Presse

continuation

In an interview, the leading actors Miller, Morgan and Dumont announced that one or more sequels would be possible if the film is financially successful.
