action

In the 13th century, three Knights Templar are attacked by the Mamluk . They can defeat the attackers, but a Knight Templar is fatally injured. The dying asks his companions to continue the mission and to keep a leather pouch safe.

700 years later: the Vatican is presenting precious treasures for the first time in an exhibition in New York at the Metropolitan Museum of Art . The archaeologist Tess Chaykin is also present with her friend Clive. Four horsemen in Templar robes appear in front of the museum and ride towards the entrance. At first everything looks like a show, but when a police officer tries to stop them, one of the riders pulls his sword and beheads him. They then ride into the exhibition and steal several valuable art treasures. When the thieves flee, Tess, chasing them on horseback, catches one of them. The police officers rushing to arrest Tess and take the injured thief to the hospital.

Meanwhile, Tess has her own theory about what happened and visits her friend in the hospital, where she discovers that the injured museum thief is in the same hospital. She disguises herself as a doctor and elicits the name "Branko Petrovic" from the injured person. A little later, a man gains entry to the hospital room and brutally interrogates the thief. After receiving all of the information, he kills him and can leave the room unnoticed before Daley arrives. While reviewing the video surveillance, Daley discovers that Tess was in the hospital room before the murder.

Tess wants to visit Branko Petrovic, but finds out that the killer was already with him. Daley has also found out that the thief was working with Petrovic and meets Tess there, whom he has temporarily arrested. After her release, Tess visits the Templar specialist Bill Vance. During the conversation it turns out that Vance was one of the knights and stole the so-called cryptograph. In the meantime the FBI has been able to track down the third tab, but they are too late here too. The unknown killer was faster and murdered him.

When Tess is being led around Vance's hiding place, the killer appears. However, Vance is able to repel the attack and returns to the hiding place. He assumes that Tess has escaped and disappears. Tess, who was in hiding, escapes into the sewer with the cryptographer and a scroll. Back home, she meets Vance, to whom she hands both over. Tess will now be included in the FBI investigation. She translates Vance's old handwriting, of which she was able to take a photo with her mobile phone, using a cryptograph reconstructed using 3D X-ray images, and learns the location of a hiding place, Fonsales . Accompanied by Daley, she flies to Turkey. The killer who reports to his client, the Vatican's advisor, Monsignor De Angelis, is also on board.

Once in Turkey they meet Jay, a CIA agent who supplies them with equipment. After the meeting, they go to Fonsales, but the killer has had a tracking device installed on their car. After a short drive, you arrive at the point where Fonsales should be, but you won't find anything there. So they explore the area, but nobody knows where the place is. They then set up camp for the night. Tess and Daley get closer by the fire, and they spend the night together. In the meantime, De Angelis has also arrived on site and is watching Tess and Daley together with the killer.

The next morning, Tess thinks they can't find the place because it was buried in a volcanic eruption. So they go back to the first place and start digging. They are about to give up when Daley encounters a buried roof. Tess and Daley descend and explore the buried city. You will find the so-called astrolabe under a tombstone . Back in daylight, they are threatened by Vance and his companions who want the astrolabe. But the killer takes the group under fire. Tess, Vance and Daley manage to escape and seek shelter in an abandoned city. While examining the bag, she finds a message that the scroll is hidden in a ship. Tess decides to leave with Vance.

Once on the coast, Vance organizes a rescue boat. Tess tells Vance about the message, but withholds its content. De Angelis, who picked up Daley in the desert, has also arrived. De Angelis wants on board, but when Daley refuses to support him any more, he is knocked unconscious by the killer. The boat is leaving and De Angelis, the killer and their prisoner Daley have boarded the ship unnoticed. When Vance and the crew of the ship find the hiding place of the scroll, De Angelis decides to intervene. But he and the killer are overwhelmed by Tess and Daley. Then the ship is hit by a huge wave and capsizes.

Tess and Daley are washed ashore on Symi and find accommodation with the hermit Konstantin. While Tess is quickly back on her feet, Daley falls into a coma. When Tess walks near the spot where she was washed ashore, she discovers the scroll she was looking for. When she looks at it, Vance suddenly stands in front of her and wants to present the scroll and its contents to the public in order to ruin the church. But Tess, moved by her warm welcome by Konstantin, does not want to allow this. Vance attacks her and tries to take over the role. But the wind hits the leaves. Vance falls down a cliff trying to save the leaves. It becomes clear that the scroll was a fake and not the gospel of Jesus Christ. It was created by the Templars to end the wars of religion.
