Scrofiano is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of the municipality of Sinalunga in the province of Siena , Tuscany region in Italy .

geography

The place is about 3 kilometers northwest of the capital Sinalunga and about 35 kilometers southeast of the provincial capital Siena in the Chiana valley . The place is in the diocese of Montepulciano-Chiusi-Pienza and is therefore subordinate to the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino . Scrofiano is 374 meters and had about 250 inhabitants in 2001. In 2017 there were 184 inhabitants.

history

The place was first documented in 1177 as a castle of the Scialenghi-Cacciaconti family. In 1271 the Republic of Siena installed a Podestà in the village . Scrofiano remained under the rule of Siena until 1554 when it was captured by Florence during the conflict between Siena and Florence. After that, the place was an independent municipality in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany . With the territorial reform of Pietro Leopoldo in 1777 Scrofiano became a district of Sinalunga.

The church of San Biagio in the center
  • Torre del Cassero , a former defense tower of the Cacciaconti, was built in the 13th century.
  • Palazzo Comunale , in the 14./15. Century originated.
  • Porta del Sole , also Porta a Sole , defensive gate of the fortifications.
  • Collegiata di San Biagio , church in the center, which, according to the inscription, was built in 1271. Was partially rebuilt in 1580 and rededicated in 1583. Contains works by Domenico Cresti (called Il Passignano , Madonna col Bambino e Santi and Immacolata Concezione ) and Santi di Tito ( Lamentazione sul Cristo morto ). The Polittico di Scrofiano by Sano di Pietro , which came from here, is now in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena .
    • Museo della Collegiata , museum that was created in 1990. Contains works by Giovanni Antonio Cerretelli ( Crocifissione , painting, 17th century), Segna di Bonaventura ( Madonna col Bambino , panel painting, 14th century) and Giuseppe Bezzuoli ( San Pietro , 19th century).
  • Chiesa della Compagnia di San Salvatore , church in the town center, which was built from 1595. Contains works by Rutilio Manetti ( Madonna del Rosario , attributed), Santi di Tito ( Annunciazione ), Ventura Salimbeni ( Madonna addolorata e santi , environment) and a copy of the work Madonna della Scodella by Antonio da Correggio .
  • Chiesa della Madonna del Soccorso , church in the forest about 1 km west of the village. Originated in the 16th century.
  • Oratorio di San Giovanni , small church below the village just before the state road that leads to Rigomagno and Sinalunga. Was first mentioned in the early 17th century.
  • Chiesa di Santa Cristina , church southeast of the village, which was built in the 16th century.
  • Chiesa di San Rocco , a church outside the town center, was built in the 15th century.
  • Monumento ai Caduti , bronze monument to the fallen , Pietra serena and Travertino , in honor of the fallen in the two world wars in the upper part of the town center (Piazza Bartalini). First created in 1920 and expanded in 1951.

  • The place is about 2 kilometers away from the Rigomagno junction on the Siena – Bettolle expressway .
  • The nearest train station is Sinalunga with connections to Arezzo , Siena and Chiusi-Chianciano Terme . The Rigomagno stop is no longer served.
