Wandering of Souls is a German television film by German director Rainer Erler from 1962 based on the parable of the same name by Karl Wittlinger .

action

Germany in the post-war period. Bum, the poor man's friend, Axel, does not really find the connection to the economic boom in the new Federal Republic. “ The soul is to blame for everything, ” he complains to his friend in a drunken state. Axel makes him the suggestion to simply "think out" the soul in a shoebox. Bum then transfers the box to a pawnshop for five marks , and with this start-up capital, Bum begins a rapid, but completely soulless rise to become economic boss. He no longer thinks about his old friend Axel.

After his death, however, Bum is faced with a problem: he cannot go into the afterlife because his soul is missing. He looks for his old friend Axel as a ghost, who then lets himself be persuaded to go looking for the shoebox with the soul and then releases it.

criticism

“ An attempt at a cheerful and thoughtful examination of the light and dark sides of the German economic miracle, reminiscent of medieval mystery games in terms of layout and form ; largely successful and full of irony. "

Others

After its first broadcast on ARD on October 2, 1962, the third feature film by the former assistant director Rainer Erler was shown for nine weeks in the legendary "Munich Studio for Film Art" and then in other German art house cinemas for more than ten years.
