Seinoir

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Seinoir is a red wine variety newly bred by the French breeder Albert Seibel at the beginning of the 20th century . It is a cross between Seibel 5163 and Seibel 880 and belongs to the large family of Seibel vines . The Chancellor grape variety was created from the same cross . Between 1888 and the early 1930s, Seibel bred countless interspecific grape varieties in the fight against phylloxera . The red wines of the variety are deep red in color but have an unpleasant taste due to the influence of American wild vines (→ Fox tone ). At the end of the 1950s, the area under vines was 5,140 hectares .

According to a decree of April 18, 2008, the grape variety is one of the officially approved grape varieties for commercial cultivation, since the genome of the plant contains parts of the noble grape Vitis vinifera . Due to its early ripeness, the grape variety is found in growing areas with a cool climate. In France , it was common in the cool regions of the Limousin , Berry , Poitou and Savoie .

Pierre Landot and Joanny Burdin created a number of new varieties, especially with the Plantet grape variety . The primary aim was to maintain the early ripeness while improving the taste properties. Seyve-Villard and Couderc also use the variety for new breeding.

Synonym: Breeding line number Seibel 8745.

Descent: Seibel 5163 x Seibel 880

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is hairy like a cobweb, the tips are greenish with a slight carmine tinge. The light green young leaves are hairless and spotted with a strong bronze color.
  • The small to medium-sized leaves are five-lobed and clearly indented. The stalk bay is almost closed, with the ends overlapping. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are set closely in comparison to the grape varieties.
  • The cylindrical to cone-shaped grapes are small and dense. The round or slightly elongated berries are also small and purple-black in color. The aroma of the berry is sour and slightly unpleasant. The juice of the berries is colored so that the variety belongs to the dye grape family .

The medium-late growing grape variety ripens about 6 days after the Gutedel and is therefore very early within the red grape varieties, so that it can ripen in cool locations. The variety is quite resistant to powdery mildew but sensitive to downy mildew and gray mold rot .
