Self Made is based on the biography On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam CJ Walker by A'Lelia Bundles, the granddaughter of Mae Walker, who was adopted by Lelia, Walker's daughter. In November 2016, Zero Gravity Management acquired the film option to develop a miniseries starring Octavia Spencer as the lead actress and producer. The William Morris Agency , which also represents LeBron James in addition to Spencer , promoted the project to this, whereupon he joined as executive producer with his production company SpringHill Entertainment. In July 2018, Netflix ordered an eight-part series with the likely title Madam CJ Walker . The other main cast was announced in August 2019. At the beginning of January 2020, Netflix announced the title of the four-part series Self Made and the release date and showed the first pictures. A trailer was released on February 25, 2020, the series on March 20.

Sarah Breedlove, a laundress with hair loss, is treated by Addie Munroe, who sells her own hair care products. When she secretly sells products for Addie, she insultingly belittles her. Sarah decides to sell her own products and moves her family to Indianapolis , where she runs a successful business in her home. When Addie shows up there and opens up competition, Sarah wants to outdo her with a larger offer, while the house burns down during production. Sarah decides to call herself Madam CJ Walker from now on. | ||||

After making a down payment on a factory building, Sarah looks for investors and hopes to win the support of Booker T. Washington at a National Negro Business League convention . She is not given the opportunity to speak there, but talks to his wife Margaret, and Sarah's husband apparently manages to invite to a dinner party, to which Washington does not appear. On the next day of the Congress, Sarah storms the stage and promotes female entrepreneurship, but is disgraced sexistically by Washington: the black woman must be relegated to her place. Sarah learns that she will die of kidney failure and urges Lelia to find an heir. She invites all of her representatives to a convention in her New York mansion. Lelia sets up contact with a drugstore chain to bring the products to a department store. The girl Fairy Mae is hired as a model for a related advertising campaign. Because Sarah doesn't want to sign CJ's divorce papers, Dora reveals to Addie that Sarah's formula is hers, and Addie threatens to sue her. The workers go on strike at the congress because they fear for their jobs due to the deal with the department store, so Sarah cancels the deal again, and Lelia presents her heir: Fairy Mae, who she adopts. | ||||
