The Devil's Blood was a Dutch hard rock / psychedelic rock band with an occult and satanic background.

history

The band was founded at the end of 2007 in Eindhoven by the siblings Selim (* 1980 in Eindhoven; † 2014) and Farida Lemouchi. While he was previously guitarist with the Dutch heavy metal band Powervice, his sister Farida, who was nine years older than him, sang in bands of different styles (e.g. Red King Rising). Selim Lemouchi was the band's sole composer and lyricist, but found it difficult to use this name:

“I have a hard time calling myself the writer of The Devil's Blood because I don't think I have too much to do with it myself. The words just seem to flow through me. I have to write it down as soon as possible or I will lose it. So I can't say exactly who or what influenced me when 'writing' the lyrics, because the biggest influence is Satan . "

Initially started only as a project, the band recorded the demo The Graveyard Shuffle with members of the Dutch black metal band Urfaust . a. in Rock Hard for demo of the month chosen and later as a 7 "single from the record label was the band released again. The EP Come, Reap , which followed in November 2008 , received consistently positive reviews in the specialist press. In September 2009 the first studio album The Time of No Time Evermore was released, which also received positive reviews. The group also releases all of its works in vinyl format, as Selim Lemouchi himself said he hated CDs . In November 2011 the second studio album The Thousandfold Epicenter was released .

On January 22, 2013, the band announced their breakup on Facebook, to which they did not want to comment; the planned performances have been canceled. In May 2013 the last album III: Tabula Rasa or Death and the Seven Pillars was released posthumously , which was recorded in Lemouchi's home studio and with partially programmed drums . The band broke up before they could actually begin recording in a professional recording studio.

Selim Lemouchi formed a new band called Selim Lemouchi & His Enemies in February 2013 , with whom he released the album Earth Air Spirit Water Fire . He died in early March 2014, the details of his death are not known.

Music style and background

Musically, the band has its roots in psychedelic rock of the 1970s; Farida Lemouchi's singing is compared to that of the Coven singer Jinx Dawson. In addition, influences of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal , in particular the early releases of Iron Maiden , and bands like Hawkwind or Rush should be mentioned. Selim Lemouchi named Roky Erickson, singer and guitarist of The 13th Floor Elevators , as one of his main influences. On Come, Reap, for example, you can find a cover version of White Faces , a song that Erickson recorded in 1981 with his band Bleib Alien.

Before performing live, the musicians doused themselves with animal blood, as does the band Watain , among others ; She saw the pig's blood the band used as “a way of carrying death on stage and thereby becoming less human. A way to make our own identities and personalities disappear and become ghosts. We have a butcher nearby, and we buy ten or twenty liters of blood there. We freeze them and use them later in our rituals. ”Selim Lemouchi saw the concerts as rituals, during which the musicians take a back seat:

“We consciously try not to present ourselves as a 'band' because we don't want to be seen as people, not as individuals. While we are playing our music, we are obsessed with Satan. This is my life, my destiny, the path I took a few years ago. The Devil's Blood are like a magnifying glass for our sadness, anger, hatred and happiness. When we leave the stage after a ritual, we return to our very personal being. Then everyone can do what they want again. "

- Selim Lemouchi :

The band referred to their "ideological closeness to bands like Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult or Watain and Dissection ", Lemouchi cited Dissection and its creative head Jon Nödtveidt as a strong musical and lyrical influence and told the Misanthropic Luciferian Order (MLO), the Nödtveidt belonged to "the greatest respect" without the members of The Devil's Blood being MLO members. Accordingly, Lemouchi believed in the "chaos that comes after the death of this world and the universe" and described its spiritual source as formless:

“I believe in things that whisper secrets and bring you wisdom. That confuse you and try to destroy you. And the fact that this is not something to be afraid of, but something desirable. You could say that I communicate directly with this source who guides me. But I couldn't be you now or describe her face. "
