SellaBand (SAB) was founded in August 2006 Music - site , originally bands wanted to give and individual musicians the opportunity to crowdfunding for a professionally recorded album to allow. In the meantime, artists of all branches could collect a budget for any purpose defined in advance. The website was taken offline following the bankruptcy of the sponsoring company in August 2015.
The enterprise
SellaBand (SAB) was founded in August 2006 by Johan Vosmeijer (formerly at Sony / BMG ), Pim Betist (formerly Shell ) and Dagmar Heijmans (formerly Sony / BMG). It was the oldest European crowdfunding site.
At the beginning of 2008 Pim Betist left Sellaband and launched Africa Unsigned . He uses Sellaband's technology as a platform and is supported by the Dutch government.
Although Prime Technology Ventures invested € 3.5 million ( US $ 5 million ) in the company as a venture capitalist on April 8, 2008, the company had to apply to the Amsterdam court for a temporary suspension of payments ( moratorium ) on February 19, 2010 , which was approved on the same day. On February 22, 2010, the payment moratorium was converted into bankruptcy.
On February 24, 2010, the insolvency administrator Paul Schaink sold the entire business, including all liabilities to believers and artists, to German investors around the new managing director Michael Bogatzki .
The company founded in Bocholt , Germany , was originally managed in the legal form of GmbH & Co. KG , later as a public limited company. The offices were in Amsterdam , the Netherlands . Since the bankruptcy, SellaBand has been continued as a GmbH . The company headquarters was relocated to Munich and later to Berlin.
On August 28, 2015, Sellaband GmbH also filed for insolvency proceedings. This was rejected by the Charlottenburg District Court on January 12, 2016 due to lack of funds .
New model
From October 1st, 2009 until bankruptcy, Sellaband was on the market with a completely new business concept. This enabled the artists to freely decide on their financing plan and also left all rights with the artists. Every artist can now collect money through Sellaband in order to finance a project, regardless of whether this consists of recording a CD or financing a tour, advertising, etc. As a result, the artist can now freely choose the budget and the consideration offered to the believers.
Public Enemy was the first successful group to start collecting money for the next CD from Sellaband. The band has chosen a budget of US $ 250,000, which can be subscribed in parts of US $ 25.
After the restart, the model was changed again. The free decision about the amount of the budget and the consideration offered for it has remained. However, the variability of the projects was limited to the production of music, marketing, concerts and the sale of tickets. At the beginning of September, the key currency was changed from US dollars to euros, which is intended to take account of the fact that the majority of artists and investors come from the euro area.
Believer
Everyone who is interested in supporting an artist registered with Sellaband can buy so-called "parts". You can freely choose how many "parts" you want to buy and whether you want to support one or more artists.
Until all "parts" have been drawn by an artist and the chosen budget is thus reached, the money collected by the believers is administered by a trustee and is therefore neither in the area of disposal of the artist nor of Sellaband. The interest earned on the accumulated money, however, will be fully collected by Sellaband. As long as not all "parts" of an artist have been sold, a believer can return already subscribed "parts" at any time. The money freed up in this way can be invested in other artists. A payout of the credit is now only possible within two weeks after the investment has been made. Once an artist has fully funded their budget, the funds invested are finalized and the trustee hands the money over to Sellaband to ensure project funding.
The change in the terms of use immediately led to lively discussions. As a result, many active believers have applied for an immediate payout of their previously deposited credit.

In principle, the artists who are active at Sellaband could work with whoever they want. One of Sellaband's strengths, however, was the ability to bring the artists together with first-class producers . It had, for example, Tony Platt ( AC / DC , Bob Marley ), Attie constr ( Scorpions , Judas Priest ), Peter Denenberg ( Spin Doctors , Deep Purple ), Steve Bush ( Stereophonics , Corinne Bailey Rae ), Mick Glossop ( Van Morrison , Waterboys ), Malcolm Burn ( Patti Smith , Emmylou Harris ) and Greg Haver ( Manic Street Preachers , Super Furry Animals ) worked on albums produced by Sellaband.
Partnerships
On December 18, 2007 , a partnership with the UK side of Amazon.com was announced. Amazon now subscribes 100 parts for every artist who reaches US $ 30,000 and sells the CDs on its own website. The partnership has since been expanded to include Amazon in Germany and the USA.
In March 2009, Sellaband announced that it would start with Chuck D’ s company BTN (Bring The Noise) Management in the USA , with the public enemy front man acting as Sellaband’s "US ambassador ".
Sellaband.de was launched in June 2009. The first sister site was implemented together with MerchandisingMedia GmbH. In the course of the concept changes and the realignment of Sellaband, the Sellaband.de project was abandoned after a short time. After the relaunch and takeover on February 24, 2010, a completely German-language website was launched again.
Artist on budget
Since the site was launched in August 2006, a total of 86 (as of April 2012) artists have achieved the budget target. The first successful band was Nemesea , who were able to close an album financing on November 2nd, 2006. The US musician Cubworld was the first to have his second project fully financed by Sellaband. In October 2010, two musicians completed projects for the first time that were not intended for recording music, but for promoting albums that had already been released.
The greatest success at Sellaband was Hind's entry at number 8 on the Dutch album charts in October 2010.
In the meantime almost 10,000 artists were registered with Sellaband. This was cleaned up in May 2009 by removing inactive artists. After the duration of a project was limited to 12 months on September 1, 2010, the number of active artists has decreased. Currently, around 700 artist parts can be drawn (as of April 2012).
Original model
Before the budget and incentives were fully flexible, each band's goal was to achieve a budget of US $ 50,000 or, since December 1, 2008, alternatively US $ 100,000, which was divided into "parts" of US $ 10 each. The budget of US $ 100,000 was not reached by any artist between the introduction and full flexibility of the budget.
Originally, every believer received a "limited edition CD" for each part purchased from the financed CD. After the system changeover at the end of 2008, every believer now only receives a "Limited Edition CD". If further parts are purchased, additional discount vouchers will be issued gradually for further standard CDs.
In addition, the Believers received a percentage (based on the number of subscribed shares of each band) of the income from the sale of the "normal" CDs and the opportunity to download the album as MP3.
