Sema & Taksim , in the Turkish context ve Sema Taksim , also group Taksim or short Taksim is a 1987 by the singer Sema and drummer Dieter Moritz in Berlin based German-Turkish musical project that has published in the 1990s, several music albums in Germany were generally available. Some of the group's CD works were also sold in general in Turkey.

Band name

Taksim is 1. a district and popular center of Istanbul. 2. Taksim (music) denotes free improvisation within classical Turkish music.

concept

Taksim as a Turkish analogue to American jazz is the approach to the amalgamation of different musical styles that defines the Taksim group. Melodies and influences from Europe and Asia as well as from the music of Christianity , Judaism and Islam can be found in her music. The Taksim group also processed classical Turkish songs from the late Middle Ages for a special program. Furthermore, she set a number of classical and contemporary Turkish poets to music for an album.

Members

In addition to the founding couple, recognized musicians from the German jazz scene such as Henning Schmiedt (piano), Martin Lillich (double bass) and Hüsnü Şenlendirici (clarinet) as well as Lothar Hensel and Okay Temiz also play at Taksim . Even Selim Sesler , the German public probably best known for Fatih Akin film Crossing the Bridge - The Sound of Istanbul , plays at times in the ensemble of Taksim. In the group's first CD production, the world-famous saxophonist Charlie Mariano was part of the formation.

Significant appearances

On their CD I hear Istanbul (October 21, 1992) they set the poem Istanbul'u dinliyorum by Orhan Veli to music, which was also heard on German radio programs.

At the invitation of the Goethe Institute in Istanbul, the group gave a guest performance at the Turkish Tünel Festival in 2004 . In the same year, Taksim also played the opening concert of the Zurich Theater Spectacle . In 2006 Taksim played for the Bochum Christ Church campaign "Monument against violence".

Reviews

The Saarbrücker Zeitung called Sema & Taksim's second CD, which is often referred to as a debut album, musically fresh and lively, poetic and optimistic . The musikblatt described it as a fantastic CD full of twists and turns and stylistic changes between Turkish melodies, typical, familiar pop lines and jazz arrangements and a successful attempt at world music symbiosis . Stereoplay gave the group the rating for their work : "courageous" . The Herford Kreisblatt even saw the appearance of the group as a possible turning point for the opportunities for oriental music on the German music market.
