Prince Semjon Fjodorowitsch Volkonsky ( Russian : Семён Фёдорович Волко́нский; * May 10, 1703 in Moscow ; † May 4, 1768 ibid.) Was a Russian lieutenant general in the Imperial Russian Army and general en chief .

Life

In May 1716 he entered the military and served in an academy, from here he was transferred to the Imperial Russian Navy in 1721 as an officer candidate with the rank of midshipman . He took part in the Russo-Persian War in the conquest of Baku and was involved in the campaign in Courland and Poland in 1734 and in the Finnish campaign in the Russo-Swedish War in 1742 . In 1749 he was promoted to major general. When he was promoted to lieutenant general in 1755 , he received supreme command of the six Imperial Russian cuirassier regiments in 1760 . During the occupation of Berlin in 1760, he also commanded the six Russian cuirassier regiments. In the Seven Years' War from 1756 to 1763 he fought with his troops in the conquest of Kolberg and was under the command of Field Marshal Pyotr Alexandrowitsch Rumjanzew-Sadunaiski .

When the Prussian King Frederick II (1712–1786) ordered the destruction of Russian supply and ammunition depots in Pomerania , Lieutenant General SF Volkonsky was deployed with his cuirassiers and other battalions to fight back. He was successful and witnessed the liberation of Kolberg and the defeat of General Friedrich Eugen von Württemberg (1732–1797). On March 16, 1762, an armistice between Prussia and Russia was agreed in Stargard, and General en chief Michail Nikititsch Volkonsky (1713–1788) signed the treaty for the Russian Empire . On March 12, 1762, SF Volkonsky was released from active military service and on May 18 of the same year appointed to the imperial council. Catherine II (1729–1796) appointed him a member of the Military Commission on June 12, 1672 and a member of the Governing Senate on September 22 of the same year . On May 23, 1763 he was dismissed from all services at his own request. He died on May 4, 1768 and was initially buried in Moscow, his remains were later transferred to the village of Novonikolskoye in the Myshkinsky district and then reburied in the church built by his wife and son in 1776. For his services he was awarded the Alexander Nevsky Order .

Semjon Fyodorowitsch Volkonsky came from the Russian princely family Volkonsky . His father was Fyodor-Michail Andrejewitsch Volkonsky (* around 1680, † 1747), who held a prominent position at the Tsar's court. His brother was the Russian major general Sergei Fjodorowitsch Volkonsky (1715–1784). Simjon was married to Sofija Semjonovna Meshcherskaya (1707–1777). Her son was the future general of the cavalry Grigory Semjonowitsch Volkonsky (1742-1768). The marriage also resulted in six daughters.
