Grigori Semjonowitsch Wolkonski ( Russian : Григорий Семёнович Волконский, born January 25, 1742 , † June 17, 1824 in Saint Petersburg ) was a prince from the Russian aristocratic Volkonsky family . As a general of the cavalry , he was military governor of Orenburg .

Life

At the age of 14 years Grigori Volkonsky came in 1756 as a lieutenant in the Imperial Russian Army and was already with 21 years Colonel in carabiner - Regiment . In 1768 he was appointed commander of the Saint Petersburg carbine regiment, with which he was deployed in the Turkish-Russian war from 1768 to 1774. The next war effort was from 1770 to 1772 in the war of the Polish Confederation of Bar . Promoted to major general he took part in the fighting in the Khanate of Crimea from 1774 to 1776 and commanded the 1st Imperial Russian Division in the Russo-Austrian Turkish War from 1787 to 1791 . Also, during the Russo-Austrian Turkish War (1787-1792), in the Battle of Măcin , he commanded a corps that was under the command of Field Marshal Nikolai Vasilyevich Repnin . From 1795 to 1796 he received the supreme command of the 2nd division , which belonged to the army of Field Marshal Alexander Wassiljewitsch Suvorov . In 1797 Grigori Semjowitsch Volkonsky was appointed privy councilor and senator . In 1800 he was dismissed from active service in the Imperial Russian Army with all honors, appointed military governor of the Orenburg governorate by Alexander I and promoted to general of the cavalry in 1805. During his tenure he campaigned for the interests of the mining industry and in 1813 equipped scientific expeditions to the Kyrgyz steppe .

After his return to Saint Petersburg in 1817 he was appointed a member of the State Council and died on June 17, 1824. His remains were transferred in 1937 to the cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Monastery in Saint Petersburg.

GS Volkonsky was the son of the Russian major general Simeon Fedorowitsch Volkonsky (1703-1768). In 1777 Grigori Semjowitsch married the Russian princess Alexandra Nikolajewna (1757–1834) from the House of Repnin , her father was Field Marshal Nikolai Wassiljewitsch Repnin (1734–1801).
