occupation

Serengeti is a German film documentary by the zoologist and animal filmmaker Reinhard Radke from 2011. The film deals with the life of animals in the Tanzanian Serengeti National Park.

action

The main subject of Serengeti is the mass migration of the wildebeest , which every year move hundreds of kilometers through the savannah in search of nutritious grass . At the end of the rainy season , they set off north in a huge herd with over a million animals. The wildebeest and other animals that join the migration, such as zebras and gazelles , are constantly exposed to danger, especially from predators such as lions and cheetahs . The crossing of the Mara is a highlight of the long hike : there the wildebeests not only have to overcome steep walls several meters high, they are also at the mercy of crocodiles . With the onset of the rainy season, however, the wildebeest leave the north again, which has long been a mystery. The reason for this is that the grass in the north is deficient in phosphorus , which forces the wildebeest to retreat to the south.

Filming took over two years. Reinhard Radke considered the cinema the more suitable medium for conveying the vastness of the Serengeti landscape and many of its details to the viewer. In contrast to the 1959 documentary Serengeti Must Not Die , the threat to and destruction of nature by humans is not the subject of Radke's film. The focus is on untouched nature:

“The film creates a devout emotion before the monumentality and beauty of this natural area, which could easily be destroyed with well-intentioned teachings. There is a time to enjoy and admire, and a time to be politically active. Both complement each other and need each other, but they shouldn't always be mixed up. "

technology

A special feature in terms of film technology are the multiple slow-motion shots . These were realized using a high-speed camera with which up to 2000 images per second were recorded. A gyroscope stabilization enabled wobble-free aerial photographs. A remote-controlled camera, hidden in a metal box, was also used.

Reviews

“The experienced nature documentarist Reinhard Radke, active for ZDF and BBC , is now approaching the almost mythological landscape that he has already visited several times with supple technical perfection . He refrains from showing the locals, who were in the original almost more often in the picture than the animals, and lets the fauna take precedence. Technically completely up to date, Radke relies on meditative calm instead of modernism. "

“[We would have liked] some more background information on the two animal species presented and the Serengeti. So you know what kind of life they lead, but not how many animals there are. After the documentation, one is not much smarter about the Serengeti and the exact location either. Still, “Serengeti” is a very successful documentary. Fascinating shots of a great landscape and spectacular animal species make for a successful film for the whole family. "

“The result was a visually very appealing film, which, however, gives the wrong picture of the Serengeti. They are not as untouched as the creators depict the landscapes. Hunting and being hunted are part of the cycle and one of the challenges in the Serengeti. But people, who are also exerting more and more influence there, are the greatest and most decisive threat of all. "

“With 'Serengeti #, Reinhard Radke presents a classically staged animal documentary that is based on similar TV formats, but thanks to the visually impressive presentation, serves the big screen in an exemplary manner. Even though 'Serengeti' cannot completely deny that it does not deliver anything really new, a new look at this natural spectacle is still worth seeing. "
