Sergei Wladimirowitsch Ivanov ( Russian Сергей Владимирович Иванов ; born September 29, 1961 in Leningrad ) is a Russian chess grandmaster .

Career

Ivanov learned the rules of chess from his mother at the age of six. He was accepted into the renowned chess school of the Leningrad Pioneer Palace, where he developed his chess talent under the supervision of the successful young trainer Sergei Chawski . He completed his studies in engineering economics at the Polytechnic Institute . In 1981 he received the title of national master, but decided against a possible career as a professional chess.

Ivanov took part in several Leningrad and Saint Petersburg city championships. In 1991, 1992 and 1994 he won the title. In 1995 he received the GM title. At the international level, he also has some tournament successes. He won tournaments in Ploieşti (1980), Chelyabinsk (1991), Stockholm (1999/2000) and Saint Petersburg (2004).

His results in club chess are remarkable. He won the Russian team championship three times (1992, 2000 and 2001) . With Bielsko-Biała he was first in Poland in 1990 , with Sollentuna SK (since 2009 Team Viking ) he was Swedish team champion in 1999 , 2000 , 2002 , 2003 , 2006 , 2007 , 2010 , 2012 and 2017 . In Spain he played for CA Reverté Albox in 2012 . At the European Club Cup he took from 1996 to 2007 six times with Saint Petersburg or Mikhail Chigorin St. Petersburg and once each with TPS Saransk and Sollentuna SK part. In 2017, he and Saint Petersburg won the senior team championship (over 50 years of age) in Limenas Chersonisou .

As a trainer or second, Ivanov supported Alexander Chalifman , Gata Kamsky and Maxim Matlakow, among others . He is also the co-author of several chess books.
