Sergio Pietro Ermotti (born May 11, 1960 in Lugano ; entitled to live there ) is a Swiss bank manager . He is Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the holding company UBS Group AG.

education

Sergio Ermotti completed a banking apprenticeship at Cornèr Bank in Lugano. He holds a federal diploma in banking and has completed the Advanced Management Program from Oxford University .

Career

Citibank

In 1985 he moved to the Citicorp Investment Bank (Switzerland) in Zurich , where he initially worked in reverse convertible bonds and eventually rose to become Vice President .

Merrill Lynch

In 1987 he continued his career in the Zurich branch of Merrill Lynch , where he was in charge of the equity derivatives and capital market activities in francophone Switzerland. In 1993 he was promoted to Managing Director and moved to London , where he became Head of European Equity Derivatives . Three years later he went to New York City , where he was appointed Head of Global Equity Derivatives , and from 1997 to 1999 he was Head of Global Equity Linked Products . From 1998 he was a member of the Executive Management Committee for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) based in London. As Head of Equity Markets from 1999 to 2001, Ermotti was responsible for Merrill Lynch's equity operations in EMEA. From 2001 he held positions as Senior Vice President and Co-Head of Global Equity Markets , and led the global equity business. At that time he was also a member of the Operating Committee and the Executive Management Committee , where he was responsible for Global Markets & Investment Banking .

Unicredit

In December 2005, when the Italian institute had taken over Bayerische Hypo- und Vereinsbank (HVB), S. Ermotti moved to Unicredit , where he became Group Board Member for the Multinationals / Investment Banking division. The asset management business was added later. From 2007 to 2010 he was Deputy CEO of Unicredit. When, after the resignation of the then CEO Alessandro Profumo , he did not get the position that had become vacant, he left Unicredit in October 2010.

UBS Group AG

In April 2011, Ermotti moved to UBS, where he became Chairman and CEO for EMEA and a member of the Executive Committee. Following the resignation of Oswald Grübel following a major loss in investment banking at UBS in London, Ermotti was appointed interim CEO of the company by the Board of Directors of UBS AG on September 24, 2011 . He has been the permanent CEO of UBS AG since November 15, 2011. When UBS AG was converted into a holding company in 2014 , Ermotti was elected Group CEO of UBS Group AG. At the end of 2015, Ermotti was named the most successful SMI manager by Switzerland on Sunday .

On February 19, 2020, UBS announced the nomination of Ralph Hamers , previously CEO of the Dutch ING Group , to succeed Sergio Ermotti. Hamers is supposed to take the lead on November 1st of that year.

Other mandates and interests

Sergio Ermotti is a member of the Board of Directors of UBS Switzerland AG and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the UBS Optimus Foundation. He is also a board member of the Global Apprenticeship Network and the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce . He is also a member of the Institut International d'Etudes Bancairesdes and the Saïd Business School Global Leadership Council at the University of Oxford .

At the end of May 2011, Sergio Ermotti founded the family foundation Fondazione Ermotti, Lugano , of which he is Chairman of the Board of Directors to this day.

Previous private mandates

From 2007 to February 2012, Ermotti was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ticino regional airline Darwin Airline . He was a non-executive director of the London Stock Exchange from September 2008 to July 2013 .

In the Ticino investment company Enterra he was a member of the board of directors and chairman of the board of a luxury hotel in Ticino. After Ermotti's appointment as CEO, there was ad interim criticism in the media because four real estate companies, of which Ermotti was Chairman of the Board of Directors, had their headquarters in Panama . Panama has been a tax haven for decades due to the very low level of transparency of the financial institutions and authorities there .

At the end of September 2011, UBS announced that Ermotti would part with the private mandate, which was completed on April 27, 2012.

Ermotti was also a member of the board of trustees of the Fondazione Lugano per il Polo Culturale, Lugano and of the LinkedIn Influencers program , for which he wrote on global economic topics.

compensation

Ermotti's total compensation for 2018 amounted to 14.1 million Swiss francs , similar to the previous year's 14.2 million. His total remuneration (excluding fringe benefits and employer contributions to the pension fund) for 2015 was 14.3 million francs, and for 2016 it was 13.4 million.

In addition to his native Italian, Sergio Ermotti speaks German, English and French. He is married and has two sons.
