Oswald Jürgen Grübel (born November 23, 1943 in Ilmenau ) is a German bank manager and was CEO of the largest Swiss banking group UBS from 2009 to September 2011 . Before that, he was at the helm of Credit Suisse from 2003 to 2007 .

Life

After Grübel lost his parents in the Second World War , he grew up with his grandparents in Thuringia in what was then the GDR during the first nine years of his life . In 1952 he fled to western Germany, where he was taken in by relatives in Frankfurt am Main . From 1961 Grübel completed an apprenticeship as a bank clerk at Deutsche Bank in Mannheim and Frankfurt.

In 1970, Grübel switched to bond trading at White Weld Securities in London and Zurich, which is part of the Credit Suisse Group . From 1978 to 1985 he was Chief Executive Officer at the company's headquarters in London. He then rose to become a member of the Group Executive Board of Financière Credit Suisse First Boston in Zug . At the same time he became Chairman of Credit Suisse First Boston Futures Trading in Zurich and Credit Suisse First Boston Asia Ltd. in Singapore . Grübel held various management positions in the Credit Suisse Group before becoming a member of the Credit Suisse Executive Board in 1991.

As a member of the Executive Board of Credit Suisse First Boston, from 1997 Grübel was additionally responsible for the entire trading activities of the bank. From 1998 to 2001 he was Head of Private Banking at Credit Suisse. At the beginning of 2002, Private Banking was subordinated to Credit Suisse Financial Services (CSFS) under the leadership of Thomas Wellauer. Grübel succeeded Wellauer in July 2002 and became CEO at CSFS.

When the then CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Credit Suisse, Lukas Mühlemann, came under fire at the end of 2002 for risky business and gave up his office, Grübel was appointed CEO of the group together with John J. Mack as restructuring engineer. In mid-2004 Mack left the bank after failing to assert himself on the board of directors with plans for a merger with Deutsche Bank. Grübel then became sole CEO.

In February 2007, Grübel announced - together with a record result - that he would resign on May 4, 2007. He was succeeded by Brady W. Dougan . After leaving Credit Suisse, he worked as an independent asset manager.

On February 26, 2009, the Board of Directors of UBS appointed him to succeed Marcel Rohner .

On September 24, 2011, Grübel resigned after a suspected fraud case involving trader Kweku Adoboli in investment banking in London. Sergio Ermotti became interim successor .

Since May 2012, Grübel has been writing a column in the newspaper Schweiz am Sonntag (formerly Der Sonntag ).

Grübel has a daughter from his first marriage. He is in a relationship and lives in Wollerau . In 2012, the Swiss business magazine Bilanz estimated his fortune at 150 million Swiss francs.
