Serie in Schwarz (French title: Suite Noire) is the name of a French TV film series with crime films in the tradition of film noir , psychological and police thrillers . The series was broadcast from March 19, 2011 in two episodes each on the Franco-German cultural channel ARTE . The TV films are based on the book titles of the book edition of the same name, which were published by Editions La Branche in Paris .

The total of eight films by Suite Noire (German title: Serie in Schwarz) are based on the crime series of the same name, which the French crime writer Jean-Bernard Pouy published for the Paris publisher Editions La Branche. From 2006 to 2010, the book series published 36 titles by well-known and less well-known French thriller authors - including Didier Daeninckx , Jean-Bernard Pouy himself, Marc Villard , Laurent Martin , François Barcelo and Chantal Pelletier . The novels were based on classic pulp , hardboiled , police thrillers and noir titles from the 1940s to 1990s, including They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (Horses Are Only Given the Gunshot) by Horace McCoy (1935), Down There (Shoot the Pianist) by David Goodis (1956) and The Dead Heart by Douglas Kennedy (1994). The book series saw itself primarily as an homage to the tradition of harder-caliber crime novels. The focus was not so much on the idea of ​​nostalgia, but rather on the idea of ​​continuing the noir tradition with contemporary French titles. An additional specialty is that the series also takes into account the format of the classic crime novel in terms of the small number of pages (usually around 100 pages).

Eight of the published titles have so far been filmed as part of the Serie-in-Schwarz series. The concept of the film series (French like the book series Suite Noire, in German Series in Black) comprised eight independent films by different directors, each with a completed novel. The length of the individual episodes is 60 or 65 minutes, which is longer than that of normal series episodes (45 to 50 minutes), but conversely remains well below the standard TV film length of 90 minutes. Aesthetics and dramaturgy are not kept in a uniform style. Overall, however, a cool, laconic, and sometimes sarcastic manner of presentation dominates. In around half of the films, the plot is driven by a narrator's voice from the off - the narrator is usually the main character of the respective story. Depiction of violence and drasticness tend to be in the upper range of the overall genre. The FSK approval was given with the label FSK-16.

The press reactions to series in black were rather restrained. The series received positive tips in some TV guides. So far , Serie in Schwarz has not been able to achieve greater resonance - positive or negative - in Germany. The DVD box for the series, published in Edition ARTE, has been available in German stores since the end of March 2011.

Next exit murder

The inconspicuous honest man who becomes the murderer is the subject of the first series-in-black film. Gabriel Landry, an employee in a trading company, tows a young intern after a company party. The two get into a car accident, the intern is dead. The problem: In order to maintain his status as a husband and happy father and to dispel suspicions of the police, Landry has to eliminate more and more witnesses and confidants. Shoot the wine merchant

The greatest passion of the 60-year-old winemaker and wine merchant Gérard is good food. When his wife again fails to live up to his eating requirements, he shoots her. In his eyes she is ideal: talented, but vulnerable to his whims. Manu, a prison inmate, is blackmailed by the police and used as an informant on a dubious radio station. His ticket to the station is the beautiful Christa. The aim is to find out the connections between the transmitter and a burglar ring. For Manu this is a highly ambivalent job: Not only does he rediscover all the forgotten feelings that he was unable to act out during his imprisonment - including affection and responsibility for his son. The eighth film in the series in black deals with the topic of flight and labor migration. The young Congolese girl Sarah has fled from Brazzaville to Roissy - to Zina, her cousin. When Zina is finally murdered and some people are chasing after her too, Sarah decides to use brute force to assert herself.
